I believe that ethics is very essential and easy in nursing practice in order to provide patient-centered care and maintain professional integrity. Especially, since we live in such a diverse area, it is essential to know how to put this into practice. Nurses play a vital role in addressing healthcare disparities and promoting access to quality care for all individuals. To accomplish this, nurses need to actively educate themselves about diverse cultures, beliefs, and practices to better understand their patients' needs. I can easily foster an inclusive and welcoming environment by respecting and valuing individual differences, promoting effective communication, and advocating for patients who face discrimination or lack access to care. I need to make sure that me and my peers are promoting and practicing equality in care making sure that all patients are cared for equally, especially in clinicals next semester. Along with understanding our own emotions and being aware of how we are feeling. It might be a challenge for me since many times it relies on non-verbal cues, such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice, which are not direct. Furthermore, I am not sure if I can interpret non-verbal cues that are critical for understanding and responding to emotions accurately. I feel like I do not have enough experience yet to be able to intensify emotions cues accurately. However, to improve emotional understanding I can focus on my own development and engagement by self-reflection and self-awareness. I can do this by taking time out for myself, getting help from peers, actively listening to patient needs, attending workshops, courses, or seminars focused on emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication. Background statement: Heritage Valley Medical Center has had a wonderful reputation for providing excellent health care services to their community. Initially, their community was 80% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 5% Hispanic. However, in the last 5 years, the population has changed to more minorities and the whites have moved out to the suburbs. This caused the Center’s occupancy rate to go down 40% because many of their traditional, more affluent, private-pay patients had left the neighborhood. To bring in revenue, they campaigned to bring in more Medicaid patients.

As a low-income, first-generation Mexican American/college graduate, my personal identities and experiences uniquely position me to contribute to RFU’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts (DEI). Through my journey, I have encountered various challenges and triumphs that have shaped my perspective and deepened my commitment to promoting DEI in healthcare and beyond. My lived experience growing up in an economically disadvantaged and medically underserved community has heightened my awareness of the healthcare disparities and inequities that exist, especially being raised in a traditional Hispanic household. Diversity Not Disparity in Healthcare Where does diversity live in a world of lost equality, according to Abrahamson (2015). “Diversity refers to the whole range of individual perspectives, beliefs, values that you will find in any one group of people, so if you take diversity seriously, you accept that every individual has a right to their own value system and that no person can impose their value system on another.” So, in our communities of healthcare can we accept diversity as equality and individual have rights, beliefs, and values in this system, sometimes disparities have no reasoning, but the resources should be readily available to us. An individual’s emotions can play a big part on the situation. The ability to control and be aware of ones emotions is emotional intelligence. Having emotional intelligence is something everyone has, just some more than others.
It is essential to communicate emotions so that you can send the right meaning to other people in interpersonal communication. It is important to remember that communication is irreversible, so once said, a message cannot be erased (mentally or emotionally.) To achieve emotional competence within interpersonal communication, you must understand, describe, and express your feelings, and handle/manage anger and fear properly. There are two parts to cumulating emotional competence, which are yourself and other individuals. You must also understand the principles of emotions so you can effectively use them to improve your relationships with others through interpersonal communication.
