In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, the character Abigail Williams is to blame for the 1692 witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts. Abigail is a selfish and manipulative person who strives to get what she desires, no matter the repercussions it may have on others. Throughout the play her accusations and lies caused many people pain and suffering, Although Abigail did not accuse all of those arrested and tried on witchcraft charges, she was the first character to "cry witch."
Though Abigail may seem heartless on a quick observation, she shares a deep feeling of emotional connection toward the character John Proctor. Several months before the exposition of the play, Abigail was employed by the Proctors to work around the house as a housekeeper

Under the interrogation of Parris and Hale Abigail makes an accusation against Tituba claiming, “She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer!” (44) Tituba Denies the accusations, but is threatened to be whipped until she confessed her doings of witchcraft. Tituba folds and confesses while naming others to become suspects of performing witchcraft. This brings in more innocent people to face trial and judgement that they so wrongfully endured. As time goes on in the play, Abigail begins to scheme and develop a plan to eradicate Elizabeth. One day Abigail visits the Proctor Household and sees Mary Warren who is the Proctor's servant, making a poppet. As Mary was creating the poppet she placed a needle into the doll, and Abigail twisted the context of her doing as something supernatural and evil. Abigail proceeds to stab herself with a needle and claims that Elizabeth is responsible. Shortly after the accusation Cheever and Hale visit the Proctors to investigate and search the house for a poppet or any other possessions that may be linked to witchcraft. Mid way through their search they discover the poppet with a needle protruding out of it, astonished Hale states,” Mary - you charge a cold and cruel murder on Abigail”. (76). Abigail Williams lust towards the girls, and john Proctor, are some of the contributing factors of the witch trials in Salem Massachusetts. Abigail is a malicious and spiteful gal who always wants her way, no matter what or who she puts in danger. Throughout the play, her allegations and lies cause many people pain and sorrow, but if it wasn’t John Proctor, she didn’t care whose life it was that she was putting in risk. Abbigail had an affair with proctor seven months before the the play even began.
Abigail says that Tituba gave them blood to drink to make Tituba confess. In this last section, I think Abigail told on Tituba to use her as a cover up so she wouldn’t be getting into right then. Last, Stealing from her uncle and skipping town to run away from the charge and guilt. ”
If a young girl in today's society was forced to grow up living with a materialistic narcissist, would society expect her to be perfect? Would society understand her need for attention and her cravings to be loved? Would society understand the cause of her insecurities? Unfortunately, in The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the Puritan society does all but acknowledge and accept a young girl’s difficult upbringing. Abigail Williams was forced to be raised by her uncle, Reverend Parris.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Arthur Miller wrote the play because he was inspired by McCarthyism. McCarthyism was the hunt for communists that was taken too far. In The Crucible he presented a universal message. He was comparing how communists did exist and witches did not, but yet they were both taken as serious.

In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, Abigail Williams lies, a lot, to keep herself safe. Throughout the story, many people are accused of witchcraft. When a person is accused of witchcraft, it is very easy for them to get out of the accusation if they lie. The lies that are told shifts the belief of who knows witchcraft, and Abigail Williams uses those lies to gain influence over other people.
Adolescent minds are the most intelligent kind of mind. A young brain is filled with creativity, imagination and innocence. Though the thought process of a teen is assumed to be selfish there are other factors involved. A combination of these characteristics seems almost dangerous. One would undermine a juvenile to use these qualities to manipulate the court for their own selfish wishes or pleasures.
Selfishness Consumes Human beings are innately driven by self-interest. They pursue goals, careers, achievements and all too often are deceitful and cheat in order to obtain them. Miller used the Red Scare as motivation to write the book. In the book Abigail and some of her friends are dancing in the woods, when Mr. Parris ( her uncle) catches them. At this point Betty, Mr. Parris daughter and Abigail’s cousin, faints.
Abigail Williams is not your typical teenage girl. She is a girl that will drink blood to kill someone, accuse people of witchcraft, and have a affair. By looking at The Crucible, one can see that Abigail Williams develops the theme of reputation, which is important because people who fear losing their reputation spread hysteria. Protecting her reputation motivates Abigail Williams to accuse others of being a witch.

She was a very young and gorgeous women but had sinned a lot against her Puritan religion. Abigail definitely did not make the right decisions for herself. She is an magnificent liar and tends to get others in trouble to save herself from getting caught.
