Surroundings and John Grady Cole In All the Pretty Horses, cultural, physical and geographical surroundings shaped John Grady Cole as a character and aided to illuminate the book as a whole. The isolated Texas land, the open Mexican wilderness and the struggles that came with each land are only a few examples of how John’s environments made him into the character he was, and in turn, affected the meaning of the book. From the very beginning, John Grady Cole is introduced on a Texas ranch that he has lived on since birth, and a sense of immobility because of this. One of the first sentences in the book explains how there was “no sound in the house [except] the ticking of the mantel clock… he shut the door.” This sentence explains how John lived a quiet life trapped in his house, only knowing the land around him. He later states, “he stayed there for a long time,” suggesting that there was no sense of time in the house.

After John Grady Cole traveled “hours down the mesa” to Mexico, he soon ran into a storm opposing his once grandeur view of Mexico. He talks about how “…the rain had almost ceased” and that “in the gray twilight… [The natives] seemed to echo like the calls of some rude provisional species loosed upon that waste”. The backdrop that had once seemed like heaven to the John quickly became a “waste,” inhabited by a “rude provisional species.” This change in narrative tone set around Mexico suggests that John Grady Cole has learned the truth; Mexico wasn’t as much of a utopia as he first expected. With this new geographical development, there is parallel character development, suggesting that the scenery around John affected him more than anything else. This helps the reader to understand the meaning of the novel by setting John in a new environment with real struggles. This low in Mexico helps to set John Grady Cole up later in the story to become the hero he was intended to
Dust Bowl, The Southern Plains in the 30’s written by Donald Worster and published in 1979, is an informative text on the Great Plains during the Great Depression. Donald Worster is a credible author because he not only earned a Ph.D. from Yale in environmental history, but he also had previously written a book on the environment and the economy. This book was written well and Worster did a good job of revealing how people and how they live have effected the areas environment. He spoke of places including, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas and many more.
Thesis: Antonio Marez should become a priest for the family but in doing so should break the traditional Catholicism tradition barriers and be able to incorporate his own life experiences. I.Rudolfo Anaya 's novel takes place in New Mexico in a small village called El Puerto. These details are true to Anaya 's life because the main protagonist is Antonio Marez, and he is modeled similarly to his life experiences. The mother comes from a family of farmers and the father comes from a family of vaqueros creating a conflict between the two and their children especially Antonio who is still in search of his own beliefs and identity. A.New Mexico or any Hispanic country has its cultural tradition but in this novel Rudolfo portrays multiple.
John Grady Cole grew up the cowboy way, and after his grandfather's death, he has been challenged with the fact that he may not live this life anymore. John Grady chooses to hold on to the old ways of time such as working with wild horses, a job that was more of a dream to him, but the changes of time are not on his side. The room is described by the narrator as “a filthy cocoon” that “took you in and hold you close” (190). The image of a cocoon implies a sense of comfort, a covering that is both snug and protective. Yet, it is also isolating, disconnecting one from the outside world, and is difficult to break free from. Furthermore, this cocoon is “filthy”, filled with “rubbish” and where one loses track of time since there are “no clocks and [watches are] lost and buried” (190). It seems as if this cocoon clutches onto everything not even garbage and time can escape.
In the essay "Children of Mexico," the author, Richard Rodriguez, achieves the effect of relaying his bittersweet feeling regarding how Mexicans stubbornly hold on to their past and heritage by not only relaying many personal experiences and images, but also by using an effective blend of formal and informal tone and a diction that provides a bittersweet tone. Among the variety of ways this is done, one is through repetitive reference to fog. The word is used many times in the essay, especially in segments relating to Mexican-Americans returning to Mexico for the winter. One of the more potent uses reads as follows: "The fog closes in, condenses, and drips day and night from the bare limbs of trees.
In the novel Insurgent Mexico, John Reed travels south of the border to experience the Mexican Revolution first hand while traveling in the year 1914. Reed was a journalist writing for Metropolitan and was ordered to bring back his work to publish in the United States. During this time Reed travelled to many places and met all different types of people from war generals, to peones, to Indians and many others. Reed has described his time in Mexico as the “most satisfactory period” in his life (Publisher’s Note), and it can be reflected through the stories he shares in Insurgent Mexico about his traveling companions and his experiences. My Kiowa Grandmother was taken from the book, The Way to Rainy Mountain by N. Scott Momaday. Momaday writes about his native tribe the Kiowa’s and grandmother because he wants to live it! He wants to feel, understand his roots, travel back in time. At his grandmother’s death, he decides to learn more about the Kiowa tribe by going to the funeral. Jovita Gonzalez & Eve Raleigh’s Caballero: A Historical Novel, took place during the Mexican American War. While military officials from the United States were occupying Texas, Mexican men such as Don Santiago de Mendoza y Soria resisted the presence of the Americano. The novel focuses on the many injustices that occur within the Mexican population. One main problem that is presented is the social viewing of race and class. Mexican people with Spanish ancestry were more likely to be respected or accepted, while those whose blood was mixed were perceived as inferior.
In All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, the main protagonist, John Grady Cole, exiles himself to Mexico when his known and beloved way of life is threatened. This experience to him was both alienating and enriching. He gets to where he is going only to have everything he has worked for taken from his hands. He is left alone and sad, but full of new insights about the world around him. John’s relationship with and the death of Jimmy Blevins, his love for Alejandra and her abandoning him, and his lost position at the hacienda ranch are three main events that leave John alienated, but enriched with worldly ideas and understandings he would take to the grave.

In this chapter Chavez states how Chicano and other indigenous American ancestors had migrated and how the migration help form an important part of the Chicanos image of themselves as a natives of the south. “The Racial Politics behind the Settlement of New Mexico” is the second chapter by Martha Menchaca.
Octavio Paz, a Mexican poet and essayist, is one of the many philosophers with a written piece regarding his understanding of Lo Mexicano. Paz’s “Sons of La Malinche” was first published in the Labyrinth of Solitude in 1950 and is a rather grim interpretation of the Mexican character, however, it captures the crisis of identity that Mexico was burdened with after the conquest. Ashen Alleys to the South A country in desolation, few humans remain, and nature in complete shambles. Under the cover of ash clouds, setting retains the tone of “The Road.” It not only sets the backdrop of the novel, but continually affects the father and son. Their surroundings cause physical, psychological, and even spiritual issues. Without the daunting background, Cormac McCarthy could not have created such a compelling story with characters that drive our hearts to the breaking point.
In the poem “To live in the Borderlands means you”, the borderlands become a place of change, such as changing from just one culture or race into a diverse culture or race and not-belonging. (Singh, A., & Schmidt, P. 2000). The poem describes how the author’s own background ethnicity people, mixicanas, identifies people like her, chicanas, as “split or mixture that means to betray your word and they deny “Anlo inside you.” (Anzaldua, F. 1987). The poem describes that the borderland is a place of contradiction, such as of home not being a home.
