Within American history, there were many different eras that have shaped this country into what it truly is today. One of these eras, which is known as one of the most influential eras in American history, is known as the Progressive era. The Progressive era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States. Many of the things that this era was trying to accomplish was to put forth efforts to outlaw the sale of alcohol; regulate child labor and sweatshops; scientifically manage natural resources; insure pure and wholesome water and milk; Americanize immigrants or restrict immigration altogether; and bust or regulate trusts. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909 and he was a huge player in the progressive era. Theodore Roosevelt was known as a man's man and was very courageous and aggressive. He was a military man with experience as the Assistant Secretary of the Navy as well as fighting in the Spanish-American war. Roosevelt was known as the president responsible for making America a power and through the use of Progressivism, he made several decisions that made America what it needed to be. Roosevelt's main accomplishments through the use of progressivism is that he took on the captains of industry and argued for greater government control over the economy, pursuing a two-pronged strategy of anti-trust prosecutions and regulatory control. In addition, he convinced Congress that a strong defense was the way to go and built up the United States Navy, and he pushed through legislation which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission new power to set railroad rates, laying the foundation for the modern administrative state. DuBois. He was born in Massachusetts on February 23, 1868, and is well known for fighting for equality and African American recognition in the political field. He had a troubled life as a child and realized that there was no true equality in the world he lived in. He then created the Niagara movement to fight racism and the Jim Crow laws by creating basically a militant force. This led to the creation of the first national African-American organization which petitioned for civil rights of African-Americans, published the newspaper, Voice of the Negro, and planted the seeds for the creation of the NAACP. There were many other important events that happened before his presidency, and some of them affected Roosevelt’s life tremendously. From October 27th, 1858 to September 14th, 1901, the amount of important events relating to Roosevelt is astonishing. Roosevelt had done many things during his early life like helping others, reading, writing, hunting, and much more.
The Progressive Era was a period of immense change during the turn of the nineteenth century. Progressives were a diverse group of politicians and citizens who desired a change in the economic, social, and political atmosphere of the time. Their activism and reform come under question from historians because of their lack of unity, and thus the validity and effectiveness of the movement is challenged. However, the Progressives were successful to a certain extent- they were successful in influencing legislation for general improvements, despite their lack of homogeneity.

Because he grew up in the Gilded Age, he viewed commercial ideals as callous and wretched, and he brought these feelings with him into public life. While Roosevelt was president, he pushed executive powers to new limits, took on the captains of industry, and argued for greater government control over the economy. He pushed legislation to regulate railroads, pushed Congress to pass laws regulating food and drugs, pushed Congress to pass laws conserving land and forests, and pushed Congress to curb the actions of trusts, he believed, to be hurting the public. Believing that the best way to ensure safety was to have strong defenses, he built up the Navy and sailed it around the world.
The Progressive Era took place in 1890 to 1920. The Progressive Era started as a social movement and started to grow into a political movement. They also did not believe in social Darwinism. They believed that the worlds problems that society faced "(poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare)" could be prevented by having safe environments to live in, having a great education, and an efficient place to work. The "Progressives" usually lived in the big cities.
Although the Progressive movement was highly influenced American politics, it was only effective during the terms of certain presidents and over certain people. Presidents such as Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Roosevelt were all presidents that used the Progressive movement to influence American politics. They all believed that moral reform, an expansion of democracy, and regulation of the economy was the goal for America. Throughout all of their terms, each president changed and added to American society and politics based off of the Progressive view. Presidents of Progressive Era During the Progressive Era, America society experienced immense changes in regards to business, politics, ethnic. Taking on the huge responsibilities, the presidents of that period, Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, actively worked toward equality and social justice. Following by the assassination of President McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, at his middle age with an exuberant personality, succeeded to the office. He was a preservationist, a trustbuster, promoting “Square Deal” and food safety policies. However, his major contribution to the era was on railroad regulation which eliminated corruption in interstate commerce.
The “Progressive Movement was an early-20th century reform movement seeking to return control of the government to the people, to restore economic opportunity, and to correct injustices in American life.” (Danzer R54). The Progressive Era marked the end of the “Gilded Ages” and a start of a new era. The Progressive Era started in 1901 in the United States (Fagnilli 26). There were many major reforms in the Progressive Era that altered and advanced American society.
The progressive movement was formed with an effort of cure to all the ills which had developed in the United States during the time of industrial growth in the last quarter of 19th century. The Progressive Era aimed at reforming the conditions for all workers and also to humanize how prisoners and mentally ill people were being treated. Another reform effort was during the period of reconstruction which lasted up to the time that America entered into the First World War. The reform was to address the issues of women rights and the temperance movement during the Progressive Era (Fox & Picillo, 2016).
Dubois. Dubois was an incredibly intelligent African American and was also one of the founders of the NAACP. Dubois wanted full rights for African Americans and wouldn’t be satisfied with partial rights. With his position in the NAACP and editor of its journal, “The Crisis”, Dubois had a lot of influence. He definitely put his influence to good use in arguing against the Plessy vs. Ferguson decision, which stated that segregation was legal as long as both races had equal opportunities.
W.E.B. DuBois and Booker T. Washington were very influential leaders for the equality of blacks, specifically ex-slaves while W.E.B. DuBois was a founder of the well known NAACP. Both of them agreed that the goal was to have black people be fully engaged in society. This meant they should be active in the economic as well as the political sections of society. Unfortunately, their differing backgrounds brought them to very different places on how they felt that ultimate goal would be achieved. Booker T. Washington was born as a slave.
Once reconstruction had been unraveled, Americans were eager to progress the United States and better this nation socially, politically and economically. Progressive People during this time desired to move from the original farming scenario, into more urban settings and city like areas. Some progressive people rejected social Darwinism and challenged the ideas of the Laissez-faire, and idolized the ideals of pragmatism—which is relying on human experience to define any truth—but that was just the beginning. Many of the progressivists wanted to reform the government and economic systems, due to accelerated urban growth and imbalance in economic power between the upper-class and the lower-class. Leaders like Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt are highly associated with aiding with these political issues of progressivism.
The Progressive Era was a time period lasting from the 1890s to the 1920s. The turn of the 20th century was an age of reform, America was experiencing rapid industrialization as well as urbanization, and a flood of immigrants began to arrive from other countries. The Progressive Era was a time of many social and political reforms. During this Era, there were three presidents who all implemented some sort of progressive reform. There was also three new amendments that were added to The Constitution.
William Edward Burghardt(W.E.B) Du Bois was one of the most prominent African- American protest leaders in the 20th century. He was a scholar and activist. He co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (N.A.A.C.P.) in 1909. He also attended a school in Nashville, Tennessee called Fisk University.
Women in the Progressive Era The Progressive Era was a time of change across America, a time when the country chose to reform into an industrialized urban country. Prosperity was widespread across America, so people turned to social issues to try to expand. Minorities in particular became a focus of this time period, and everyone tried to find a way to integrate them into society.
