World War II was a horrible event spanning from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945. The causes of World War II were the Japanese expansion because they didn’t have enough resources for the amount of land and people that they had. So the they invaded Manchuria in 1937, And China in 1937. Another reason why World War II happened was because there were many dictators and they wanted to control more land so they all kept invading other countries. In Germany the Nazi party rose to power. The way Hitler became the dictator was that the Germans wanted their economy to increase and the national pride. Hitler said he could give them that. In 1934, Hitler became the dictator of Germany. The first battles in the atlantic favored the Germans greatly. The Germans would use there submarines to sneak up on British ships and sink them with torpedoes. The Allies had no idea what to do and lost a lot of ships from the submarines. The German submarines were called U- boats, this was short for Unterseeboot, which in english meant under-sea boat. The Germans quickly bumped up the manufacture of their U-boats and had hundreds of submarines patrolling the Atlantic Ocean by 1943. The Allies tried to counter the U-boats by travelling in large groups called convoys. They often had destroyer warships that would help to escort them and defend them from attacks. For a while this method was a decent strategey in helping get ships through safely to Britain. However, as the Germans built more and more submarines the convoys became less and less successful. In 1943 the battle was at its highest point. The Germans had a large number of submarines in the Atlantic, but the Allies had broken the Germans secret codes and had developed new inventions for fighting submarines. Over 30,000 sailors were killed on each side. The Allies lost around 3,500 supply ships and 175 warships, and the Germans lost 783 submarines. Allied planes used a large light called the Leigh Light to find submarines that had surfaced at nightime. Pearl Harbor: The attack on Pearl Harbor happened on December 7th, 1941. Japanese airplanes made a surprise attack on the US Navy that day. They destroyed a lot of ships and killed plenty soldiers. It was this attack that made the United States enter World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a complete surprise. Hundreds of Japanese bombers and fighter planes flew to Pearl Harbor and attacked. The bombers dropped bombs and torpedoes on the war ships, and the fighter planes attacked the United States’ fighter planes on the ground so they could not take off and fight back. There were two attacks and by the end of the second one a number of US ships were destroyed. Here are the casualties from both sides during the attack. Even though the Japanese inflicted a lot damage to the US Navy, they did not cripple them. They damaged many ships including warships, destroyers, and cruisers. They also destroyed a lot of the fighter planes and aircraft at the bases.
