Learning ability includes aspects such as curiosity and thirst for knowledge. In addition, the end of school life does not mean the end of learning. People can only improve themselves through learning and renewing themselves. Thus, only if a student has learning ability, he or she can learn new skills or knowledge after graduating from schools. How far or successful level a person can pursue, greatly depend on his or her life-long learning. This ability should be spontaneous. In Kwame Anthony Appiah’s article, “What Is the Point of College?”, he discusses the division of college into two main purposes that both intertwines and clashes with each other. The first is to provide students the practical knowledge and skills that can be applied in the “real world”, once they graduate and enter the workforce. It caters to the students’ wants and expectations in the hopes that it’s steep price tag will be justified. The second is to expand the minds of the students and have them think out of the box. It encourages them to challenge their own ideologies and be open to that of others.
Caroline Bird in her essay titled “College is a Waste of Time and Money” argues that college education is a useless endeavor that is often forced on students. According to Caroline Bird, students lack motivation and enthusiasm for college education. If money is the goal of education, she opines that there are better ways of investment. She also claims that college education does not make a student more ready for jobs and neither are there jobs that are relevant to the field of study. When there are some students who become very successful she says that the contributing factors are mainly intelligence and family background rather than their college education.
We as a society are manipulated by the idea that a college education will fix all of our problems and allow us to pursue a successful life. From my experience and perspective, attending a two year college surpass to a university due to tuition and class size.
It has taken many years for people in society to break out of the norms and expectations of how to grow up and live in the world. A huge factor in this “revolution”: attending college. Whether it is taking a gap year to discover the world and the waiting opportunities, or simply running with it all after high school to work, attending college isn’t considered a given anymore. Now not all cases are the same for every person, therefore they can only decide what is the best path for them after high school. Still, the benefits of a being a college graduate will never be diminished.
In my assumptions, I thought that a student's intelligence can expand just by being hard-working, studying, and listening to their teacher. Then I realized after by reading these 5 research articles I know knew that there are different ways to improve a student's mind of thinking. Anaheim schools can improve student success if the following changes take place. In order to increase student success in Anaheim, schools are to double the school day hours. A change that needs to happen in Anaheim schools to improve student success is that the students need to be challenged in the topic of where the students struggle.
