People have always found ways to show their disapproval of governmental decisions and took action into it. Civil disobedience is the refusal to obey laws, without using violence. Uncivil disobedience is the refusal to obey laws, using violence. Civil disobedience is more effective in the case of Martin Luther King Junior, the walk-outs, and the sit-ins. Civil disobedience is effective because protesters will not kill anyone so, fewer lives are lost and because it shows that non-violence demonstrates strength. A current issue, we have today in Los Angeles, is the deportation of undocumented, hardworking people. Someone who demonstrated strength without the use of violence is Henry Thoreau. Thoreau was a transcendentalist, a person who accepts these ideas not as religious beliefs but as a way of understanding life relationship, people most closely associated with a new way of thinking loosely through a group, philosopher and writer. Thoreau practiced civil disobedience in his own life and spent a night in jail for refusal to pay taxes in protest of slavery and the American war in Mexico. He showed courage by standing up for what he believes is wrong and did not care what the consequences were. The Sit-In Movement is a great way to show strength without the need of violence. The Sit-In Movement occurred on February 1, 1960 in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was about four African-American college students who went into a white only lunch counter at the local Woolworth’s store and asked for coffee. Their service was refused, and as a sign of “peace” they patiently waited until they can be served despite of all the threats and intimidation they were caused. When it came to the students being attacked, they would curl up into a ball on the floor and take the hitting. When the police would come in to arrest the demonstrators, there were more students in line to take the vacated seats. Regardless of all the beating the students got they never seemed to have given up on their chance to be seen as any other white person and been given the right to have some coffee, something a lot of strength. For one to show strength, it does not mean to be the strongest person in this world, but to show that no matter what gets in the way, no matter what tries to stop someone from quitting what they are doing, they do not. They are given a million reasons to give up but having one reason to keep them going that is what truly makes a person be full of
