Inequality of women
Vera Nazarian said, “ A woman is a human. She is not better, stronger, wiser, more intelligent, more creative, or more responsible than a man. She is never less. Equality is a given. A woman is a human.” This shows that men and women should be equally treated, regardless of your gender. One example of a person who is treated unequally because of their gender is Curley’s wife, a character in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife is the only woman on the ranch and is isolated. Her husband, Curley, is never with her and does not respect her. No one wants to talk to her or be around her since she is a woman. She is also treated very unfairly and unequally by the men on the ranch. Steinbeck argues that society views women as unequal to men because they are discriminated through the use of the actions and comments of people on the ranch.

After Curley asks Slim where his wife is, Slim burst into the bunkhouse after putting tar on the donkey’s split hoof with Curley following him. Slim asks, “Why’n’t you tell her to stay the hell home where she belongs?”(Steinbeck, 62). Curley’s wife is treated like property. Slim says “Tell her to stay the hell home.” Curley’s wife is Curley’s responsibility should take care of her. Likewise, Curley’s wife cannot make any decisions for herself. Steinbeck make Slim say this to show that Curley’s wife is treated like
“‘Well, you been askin’ me too often, I’m gettin’ God damn sick of it. If you can’t look after your own Goddamn wife, what you expect me to do about it? You lay offa me” (Steinbeck 62). When Curley cannot find his wife, he becomes quarrelsome and confrontational, putting others in danger. Due to Curley’s wife not staying by her husband’s side, the other ranchers’ duties as well as the lives are put on the line, considering Curley’s amount of power on the farm and his well-known wrestling career.
Have you ever felt left out or unappreciated. That's how the 2 characters from the book Of Mice and Men felt one . John Steinbeck wrote this book in the year 1937, this book is about two men named George and Lennie. They were looking for jobs in a place called Soledad because Lennie caused problems in a town called weed. When they finally found a new job everything was going great until Lennie kills a character's wife named and the guy’s name is Curley.
Curley’s wife begins to regret living on the ranch with Curley. She starts to regret living there because of the way they treat her. And also because she could be doing better in her life instead of sitting around being bored and only being able to associate with Curley. Curley’s wife states “ I tell you I aint used to livin’ like this, I coulda made somethin’ of myself.” (Steinbeck 88).
One example of gender inequality is when Elisa was talking to the tinker about his lifestyle, “It must be nice,” she said. “It must be very nice. I wish women could do such things.” “It ain’t the life
Steinbeck also uses her to represent the double standard which was present at the time by placing her in situations where the men were given more respect than her. Throughout the course of this novel, Steinbeck uses Curley’s wife to point out that the gender
John Steinbeck was ahead of his time in his portrayal of women in the 1937 novel Of Mice and Men. Curley’s wife exemplifies the stereotype and mistreatment of women from the early 1900s to present day. Curley’s wife struggles to find a voice in a male-dominated society and suffers mistreatment from other characters. Curley’s wife is dehumanized, discriminated, and persecuted until her death, which makes her the most deserving of the reader’s sympathy.ssd Steinbeck incorporates the mistreatment and degradation of women by never disclosing Curley’s wife’s name. This conveys the wife as Curley’s property.
Slim likes Lennie and Curley feels obliged to listen to him. Not only does Curley represent the theme of man's inhumanity to man, but Curley's wife does as well. Curley's Wife is not the example of a perfect wife. Curley and his wife are not the loving couple everyone admires either. Because Curley
This quote shows how Curley's wife believes that she is better than the workers- partly because she is their boss. “She turned on him in scorn. ‘Listen, you n***** she said. “You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?” (Steinbeck, 80).
Curley does not care that his wife is dead, he just wants to brutally kill Lennie now. “I’m gonna get him. I’m going for my shotgun. I’ll shoot ’im in the guts.” (Steinbeck 96)
Steinbeck demonstrates the theme of inequality between men and women through the conversations Elisa has with her husband, and the tinker throughout the story. In the story Elisa has two different conversations with two
John Steinbeck’s presents Curley’s wife in a way that comes off as she is being abused. In Of Men and Mice Steinbeck clearly portrays Curley’s wife as a victim and not a villain, as others would see her. She is abused by Curley, mistreated by the other men on the ranch, and she is treated like she does not exist with no respect or value. Curley’s wife is a victim because Curley her husband, abuses and mistreats her.
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck portrays the theme of social injustice throughout the story in the lives of several characters that include Lennie, Curley’s Wife, and the stable buck, Crooks. All of these characters are mistreated in some way, shape or form. The hardships that these characters faced help guide us to see the social injustice that is prevalent in the story. Lennie is a victim of social injustice due to the fact that he is mentally disabled. He is not treated fairly when he was accused of rape.
In the novella Of mice and men by John Steinbeck, two men George and Lennie, have many limitations in life. George and Lennie end up on a farm where they meet people who also have limitations, one of those people happens to be Curley 's wife. Steinbeck crafts Curley 's wife as a sexualized object in order to reveal that women are dehumanized and thus excluded from the American Dream. Not only Does Curley 's wife have to deal with being the only women on the ranch full of men
Of Mice and Men is a novella describing a story filled with men except for one, Curley’s wife who lives on a ranch dominated by men. Curley’s wife is a portrayal of all women during the 1930s and the struggles they had to face. She suffers from oppression because she is blamed for distracting the men from doing their work merely because of the way she looks and she is compared to an object. “Curley’s wife” is barely a name for a woman and Steinbeck uses this title for her to dehumanize her and show that she is Curley’s object. She is a female archetype of a temptress representing a sexist view of women.
He avoided looking at Lennie” (Steinbeck)This shows that Curley knows that Slim can “ruin” him so he doesn't tell anybody like he said in the quote. He also took leadership in this scene and told people what to do to help Curley and everybody listens to him and believed he knew what he was talking about. Slim is a born leader for this book. The idea of Slim that Steinbeck had was phenomenal.
