Reconstructing Progress Reconstruction and Progressivism were both trying to prove the same thing, our country could protect itself and rebuild itself, but only one was successful. The United States of America (USA) have gone through plenty of awful and outstanding experiences. Resulting in an awful, yet outstanding country. To this day, some could say Americans are still going through changes, like our ancestors, which is true. Two of these experiences were the Reconstruction era, and the Progressive era, and they were both excessively necessary, yet harmful, to America. In 1863, Reconstruction became apparent, officially starting in 1865. Because of Reconstruction, several things in the USA went wrong. The negatives of reconstruction were enormous. Several ideas, such as Johnson’s plan, Lincoln’s plan, and the Radical Republican plan (“Reconstruction”). Because of the plans crashing and burning, the USA was continuously getting worse, and more and more and more separated. Especially because of the Civil War ending, many people were still up at arms over those who were no-longer enemies. After several of these plans not working, they had finally come up with …show more content…
The whole country was in chaos because of these two eras. Despite this, the USA progressed, and continued to grow. Reconstruction brought the USA the fourteenth amendment, and led Americans on a path to equality. Progressivism brought the USA protests, and a reason to fight for one’s own rights. Several issues had boiled up, such as in the Reconstruction era, president Andrew Johnson wanted to enforce slavery, despite Abraham Lincolns former plans. Just as fast as issues boiled up, they were brought down. With Progressivism, began a quest of rights, the right to have an abortion, or in general, women's rights ("Digital History"). War to rights, the Reconstruction era and Progressive eras were both equally
Reconstruction is during which the United States began to rebuild the Southern society after they lost to the civil war. It lasted from 1865 to 1877, and it was initiated by President Lincoln until his assassination in 1865. President Johnson continued Lincoln’s agenda to continue the Reconstruction. Throughout the process of Reconstruction, one of its main purpose was to guarantees for equal rights for all people, especially for the African Americans. Even though slavery was abolished after the civil war, many Southerners were still against the idea of equal rights for all black people, such as the Republicans.
The Reconstruction was unsuccessfull because of some important reasons. First, the South was still aracist part of the United States because they created the Jim Crow Laws, what means that the people who lived and administratedthe South were not intelligent. The second example is that Abraham Lincoln, who started and incentivated the Reconstruction, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, so it made the Reconstruction process to be less efective. Finally, the last problem was the Solid South, it is a name that the South recieved because it was a solid white, solid racist and solid Democrat, what means that they were not able to support black people. Concluding, all of these examples shows why the Reconstruction was unsuccessfull
Reconstruction is known as the period following the Civil War of rebuilding the United States. Every political question was a debate and they were many questions and statements and speeches. In the Reconstruction era the United States began to rebuild the South after the Civil War which lasted from 1865-1877. The federal government put forward many plans to readmit the defeated Confederate states to the Union. The Reconstruction Era left many legacies such as the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments
The compromise of 1877 led to the republicans receding from the south as well as a southern democrat being appointed to the republican president’s cabinet. Apart from this there also led to more railroad development to the south which would in turn lead to more industrialization in the south. The compromise helped the south and north work better together and work to be in agreement in order to avoid further tension and disagreements that would further divide the nation. The reconstruction era was an era in which more people began to have a voice and have more freedom but this was not okay with some people because they believed that things did not need to change and they should stay the same way they had been. With a new control in power this would lead to a change in the freedoms people have.
Reconstruction brought healing to the nation and the newly freed slaves through Congressional Reconstruction; however, it also brought destruction to them as well through Presidential Reconstruction. Reconstruction dealt with the issues of slavery and a divided Union. After the North’s victory of the Civil War, the United States issued a “reconstruction” to help amalgamate the country back to one nation, like it was before. While reconstruction was all encompassing and had many sections to it; the ex- slaves were the most influenced and impacted by it.
In 1865 The North was amazingly prosperous, with a booming economy and a large amount of supporters there was no way The South could keep up. The South lay in ruins and the population dwindled with the shortage of food, shelter and clothing. The Reconstruction was necessary to help rebuild and reunite the nation, the Government at the time sought out ways to help southerners and give slaves more rights. During the Reconstruction African Americans where given freedom to vote, now making up the majority of Republican voters. Some historians group the Reconstruction and “Black Supremacy” together due to the growth of African Americans serving in office.
The country was in shambles and needed a plan to heal, so under Abraham Lincoln he began to do just that. He gave the hope of peace and prosperity to the entire nation, under which it would slowly rebuild. Though the Radical Republicans had to take over this project it clearly became a bright spot in American history for the changes made to help freedmen. Throughout the country the Lincoln’s idea of reconstruction had been signal of hope for many of its people, but because of his assassination the hope steadily diminished.
Reconstruction Era took place following the Civil War, in the years 1865-1877. It was a time that had many different leaders with which had their own objectives and plans. This was a time with great pain, endless questions, and goals. Although there were struggles and pain along the way The Reconstruction was a success. After Andrew Johnson was elected president, and the chaos from the Lincoln Assignation settled down, things began to fall into place.
Reconstruction was a period from 1863-1877. That can best be defined as a successful reconstruction because of the good goals and how they impacted African Americans. Whose goal was to remove the inequality of slavery and reunite the divided nations and integrate Africans into society. Some historians believe that Reconstruction was a failure because of the cons African Americans received, however, this view is incorrect because Reconstruction was a success due to African Americans receiving opportunities, banning slavery, and being involved in society. Reconstruction was a failure due to the cons African Americans received and the way they were treated.
At the end of the Civil War between the North and South arose the Reconstruction era. This was a time period of the late 1800s where the united states, specifically the North started to attempt the rebuilding of the South. Abolitionists were eager to see the end of slavery and Lincoln attempted to end slavery. President Lincoln attempted to put in place the Emancipation Proclamation which stated all slaves in confederate states would be free. This was to weaken the southern states; except, the confederate states did not obey.
The American civil war led to the reunion of the South and the North. But, its consequences led the Republicans to take the lead of reconstructing what the war had destroyed especially in the South because it contained larger numbers of newly freed slaves. Just after the civil war, America entered into what was called as the reconstruction era. Reconstruction refers to when “the federal government established the terms on which rebellious Southern states would be integrated back into the Union” (Watts 246). As a further matter, it also meant “the process of helping the 4 million freed slaves after the civil war [to] make the transition to freedom” (DeFord and Schwarz 96).
People thought it was chaos and needed to be dealt with. Alan Brinkley states, “Well before the end of the nineteenth century, many Americans had become convinced that rapid industrialization and urbanization had created a growing crisis” (476). Some of the main points of the progressivism movant were the role of women in society, racial equality, the rights of labor, and the impact of immigration (476). The supporters wanted to change the way the United States was progressing. Overall, Progressivism is similar to the New deal because they wanted them to change and needed stabilization in the way the United States was progressing in the future.
Reconstruction is the time period after the Civil War, where the country attempted to improve the Union. There were many successes, but what also comes along with success is failure. During the reconstruction many failures were present; such as the lack of racial equality and blatant racism towards blacks, a failing economy in the South, and tense relations between the North and the South. This created a very intense and challenging period of time for the Union.
Once reconstruction had been unraveled, Americans were eager to progress the United States and better this nation socially, politically and economically. Progressive People during this time desired to move from the original farming scenario, into more urban settings and city like areas. Some progressive people rejected social Darwinism and challenged the ideas of the Laissez-faire, and idolized the ideals of pragmatism—which is relying on human experience to define any truth—but that was just the beginning. Many of the progressivists wanted to reform the government and economic systems, due to accelerated urban growth and imbalance in economic power between the upper-class and the lower-class. Leaders like Woodrow Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt are highly associated with aiding with these political issues of progressivism.
Reconstruction a Failure or Success? Throughout the years, America has gone through many different political changes. Many presidents selected with different plans for our future. Sadly, many of those objectives have failed or came to an end.
