Hello Mrs.Foreman and classmates. Lately, many people have been asking, “Why do people protest? “ and “Why is protesting important?”. The most important reason that people protest is to fight for what they believe in.
There are people out there that say protesting is purposeless or pointless. Those people are wrong. Protesting is the last resort when there is nothing else left that we can do. As I’m watching the protests on the news, I know those concerned Americans are showing rectitude for others who have been treated unfairly. People never back down until they get what they want to accomplish, or at least bring awareness for the issue they are trying to address.
Some protests in the past have worked. For example, the Boston Tea Party. This conflict started when the British enforced a selfish act called the Tea Act. This act was made just to get the British East India Company out of debt. This made the colonists very angry. So on the night of December 16, 1773 the colonists, dressed up as Native Americans, boarded the British ships, and threw all of the tea overboard into the Boston Harbor. The main reason they did this is because they were protesting against taxation, but this lead to their independence from England years later.

This was a non-violent protest. According to USA Today 2.6 million strong women in America were involved in the march. This was to protect legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues. These women weren’t only marching for women’s rights, but for equality for all.
On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks changed history for all African Americans. Just because of her race she had to give up her seat. She refused to do this, and she was arrested. Not all protests are crowds of people holding up signs. Even though this was a small protest. It changed more than anyone could have
When it comes to America's History you can clearly see how peaceful protest has brought this world to what it is today. If it wasn't for people such as Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks who voiced their opinions in a nonviolent manner, it's possible that our world would not have reached this equivalent state. While it is true that peaceful resistance has positively affected our society for centuries, these brave people have faced the consequences. For example, King was arrested after one of his nonviolent protests and sent to Birmingham Jail. While there he wrote the now famous piece "A Letter From Birmingham Jail".
The main idea is of this article is on the reason why protesters are protesting in the first place, not which methods of protesting they choose to
To show England that they would not give up, on December 16, 1773, a group of colonists snuck onto a ship filled with tea and dumped around 350 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This is known as the Boston Tea Party. They did this because the British would not let colonists grow their tea and charged them for the tea that came from England. The colonists wanted their independence from Great Britain so they
The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773. The colonists dressed up as American Indians, and they proceeded to sneak onto the British ships. The colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor. This was once again an act of rebellion by the colonists who were tired of the British
Initiating a violent protest will alert their communities of the issue but in a negative way. While a peaceful protest is more likely to positively bring awareness to the issue and spark change. Standing alone can be hard because it means going against social proof. People who stand alone on certain issues and beliefs notify their communities to the existence of a
The protests should have been encouraged and allowed as long as they stayed peaceful. These protests are what changed American society to become what it is today. Without it we would be stuck in the ways of
"If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so. "-Socrates. Peaceful resistance to laws positively impacts a free society because the society is not free unless it's able to check the government. As long as the protest of the law remains peaceful it is a good thing. It is the public telling the government that they will not let them gain to much power and crush their human rights.
You also mentioned the benefits of protesting and its ability to make a great difference for the cause that is needed to be heard. “The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the
During the mid-20th century a group of nonviolent protesters call the Freedom Riders began a nonviolent campaign against the segregation of bus facilities in the south. The social activists which were both white and black college students would peacefully ride Greyhound busses through the south as an act of civil disobedience. The most notable states would be Alabama and Mississippi where they would face violent mobs and corrupt sections of government. Unfazed by the attacks on them they would continue on and even gain support as more and more people would seek an end to segregation.
I believe that civil disobedience is good for the advancement of the American society. This a simple fact which has been proven many times by history all around the world. A few examples of important historical participants and leaders in civil disobedience include Mohandas Gandhi, Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks and much more. Mohandas Gandhi was an Indian man who spent his life protesting the unjust anti-Indian law in Britan using, you guessed it, civil disobedience. Most importantly on March 30, 1930, when he lead a defiance march to the sea.
That message is the keystone in American democracy, and when so many people practice it they are helping society to understand how people are feeling. Even though the protests were in opposition to the new president, President Trump went on twitter to write that protesting is an essential part of democracy and that everyone who took part in the marches had a right to be there. This shows that even when the resistance is against someone, they are still able to agree that it is important to not suppress it and to not prohibit
The consequences of peaceful protesting is, the marchers from Selma to Montgomery, had to go back and march three times. The first march wasn 't what they wanted to achieve and got sent back to the bridge. The second march was when they were crossing the bridge. The police officers attacked them with stick, teargas, clubs, arrested innocent people, guns were fired, knocked people to the ground, whips, rubber tubing wrapped in barbed wire was a weapon that the police officers whipped at the marchers. The third time they went to march, they won Federal Protection and they successfully marched for their cause.
There are times when people must rebel to make a change. It has happened throughout different movements to change unjust laws, and go against unjust people. One big example of civil disobedience during the civil rights movement were sit-ins. Sit-ins were when people continued to peacefully sit in on a restaurant when they were denied service. It was almost a way of life for many people.
Peaceful Resistance no matter what way you look at it, it 's still going against someone whether it involves words or actions, resistance still causes more conflict. The last 5 years we have had people say they want change through these “peaceful protest” but these peaceful protests have done nothing but turn to violent riots were theirs damage to vehicles, business families rely on destroyed, bystanders hurt, officers killed and our country torn apart. Back when Martian Luther King Jr was around and he had his Peaceful Resistance or rallies for equality, they were peaceful and brought our country together with something that needed to be changed, but the protest we’ve had the last 5 years… he would be ashamed of. Peaceful Resistance to laws does negatively impact our free society in America. First going along with what I said about there being “peaceful rallies” even though some people may be at these rallies to make a difference to support their opinion, not everyone can respect that.
Research shows that small protests will likely be unsuccessful because there is not enough power to change but I claim that small protests can be more successful than bigger protest. Smaller protest can bring people to their side. An example would be a famous person going on a hunger strike because they disagree with the government’s policies. How would you react? Probably by helping them or being on their side because they are famous.
