I was doing research on how and why Uranus was discovered when it was. William Herschel, a curious man, was a musician by trade, but an avid astronomer. He had the firm belief that there was extraterrestrial life, a popular belief at the time, and searched diligently for it in his spare time. Unfortunately, the telescopes in that time period were rather poor quality, much to Hershel's frustration. So, he decided to make his own telescopes, which became better and better each time he made a new one. One day, as he was observing Saturn, he spotted Uranus, which he believed to be a comet at the time. No one else believed him until the planet got enough for them to barely spot it on their lower quality telescopes. This made Herschel famous and
William Herschel was the first to notice this odd object and was curious to find out more. This odd object, Uranus, was the first planet in recorded history to be discovered. The discovery of Uranus was just the beginning of William Herschel’s discoveries. He left his work with music and became
Jacob Kaeser Ms.Etsell Writing 8/10 3/7/23 Caroline Herschel lived a great life where she overcame roadblocks and achieved great feats. There are 3 reasons for why she is like that. The three reasons are, she has received great awards, and she has made great contributions to the astronomy community. My first reason for Caroline Herschel overcoming great roadblocks and achieving great feats is all the accomplishments and awards she has received. Caroline was the first ever woman to discover a comet.
Herschel, an amateur astronomer, was not seeking to discover a new planet. Besides general curiosity, his motivations appear to be money, prestige, and power. He was looking for double stars as a way to measure stellar parallax. He had built his own 7ft reflector telescope which he moved to his house in Bath. There he discovered what would later be called Uranus.
Uranus Uranus, the first god of the sky and lord of the universe. We was born from the Chaos and Gaea. Chaos was pretty much nothing and Gaea was the goddess of the Earth pretty much mother nature. Uranus had 18 children 12 titans, 3 cyclopes, and 3 heratoncheires. His children were Cronus, Rhea, Hyperion, Mnemosyne, Themis, Coeus, Phoebe, Prometheus, Epimetheus, Metis, Oceanus, and Tethys.
So, he set out to build his own. After multiple failed attempts and several successes, he finally completed construction of optics of “superb quality.” The telescope, which included the magnifying power of 6,450x, was found to be “far superior even to those used at the Greenwich Observatory.” In 1781, after completing several mappings of the night sky, Hershel (et al) observed an object that was not a star. It turned out to be the discovery of the planet Uranus.
It is the only planet to spin perpendicular to its solar orbital plane. William Herschel discovered Uranus in March of 1781. At first when he saw it he thought that it was just a comet. Anders Johan Lexell and Pierre-Simon de Laplace found out that it wasn’t a comet and that it was a planet! Laplace and Lexell were key in helping discover Uranus.
One of the most well known astronomers of all time is Nicolaus Copernicus. He was known to think outside of the box and dreamt of bigger things in life. Copernicus did not see the world and its surroundings like everyone else did. Having such a brilliant mind helped him discover an important theory. Many scientists and astronomers would never see our solar system the same.
This resulted in misconceptions from scientists and allowed them to have finite observations. To truly understand the planets around Earth and how they move, astronomers required more advanced technology. The Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei, made
John Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781 while searching for double stars. There had been recent developments in Newton’s mathematics that would allow astronomers to calculate the orbits of celestial bodies and he wanted to learn more about the physical nature of stars. When he first saw Uranus through his seven-foot reflecting telescope, he thought it was a comet. Very few astronomers believed there was a possibility of more planets, other than the five they knew of, the moon, and the sun. It wasn’t until a Russian astronomer calculated the orbit of the “comet”, following a slow moving path, that it was determined that it was a planet.
Astronomy: The Discovery of Uranus by Herschel I chose: Astronomy: The Discovery of Uranus by Hershcel in 1781. I was amazed how a musician, working with crude 7 foot reflecting telescope, and micrometer could find a planet in the wide expanse of space in the year 1780. In the scholarly report: Uranus and the Establishment of Herschel’s Astronomy; the author describes the process that was fastidiously executed, documented, and reported to the scientific community by Herschel. Herschel, a musician, also practiced amateur astronomy.
Astronomy: Discovery of Uranus by William Hershcel in 1781 William Hershal was raised in a family of musicians. As he grew older he studied from a book entitled “Harmonics”, by Robert Smith. After reading it another one of Smith’s book caught his attention, “The Compleat System of Optiks”, an introduction to telescope construction. Hershel wanted a telescope, but they were expensive.
Sir William Herschel helped to lead the discovery of the planet Uranus, and then to the discovery of the two rings around the planet 190 years earlier then scientists would confirm their direct origins. Uranus was first discovered by Herschel on March 13, 1781 and firstly called it the "Georgian Planet" in honor of King George 3rd. But upon further investigation in March 1787, Herschel was gazing upon the planet and realized something odd. For there appeared to be two distinct rings around the planet, which he continued to see night after night. Thinking it must have been due to defective equipment two years later, Herschel decided to turn around the mirror on his reflector by 90 degrees.
Edwin Hubble and the Theory of the Expanding Universe by Susan Zannos tells the adventurous, eventful life of Edwin Hubble. Edwin Hubble was known for his astronomical part of life. He was a man who did everything he could just to study astronomy. He was very interested in space and made many observations. He was also known for solving four major mysteries in astronomy.
His discoveries consisted of massive moons rotating around Jupiter as well as disfigured patches on the surface of our biggest star. This led him to discover the phases of Venus, which had proved his
The Discovery of Uranus by William Hershel William Hershel was a German born, living in England as a musician. One of his interests was astronomy, and he found himself searching the planets for life night after night and looking for double stars and fuzzy objects called nebulae. Since the telescopes available at the time were poor quality, he proceeded to construct his own, more powerful ones. In doing this he was able to observe farther distances with more accuracy. One night on March 13, 1781 he observed what he thought was a large nebula or a comet.
