GYM GRADES SHOULD NOT AFFECT THE GPA Smart kid's grade point averages, or GPA's, are brought down by bad gym grades. This can affect kids getting into college. By not letting gym grades affect the GPA, less athletic children have a better chance of getting into a good college. However, athleticism has absolutely nothing to do with getting good grades in the core subjects. The student's grades in gym should not affect their grade point averages because it encourages bullying, the grading scale is subjective, and GPA's are a measure of a student's academic prowess. Gym class will encourage bullying through all types of forms. The grading scale will vary every day depending on the objective. Students are being graded on how fast they can run a mile, but this is unfair to those who are genuinely trying but just cannot meet that standard. Cheryl Richardson, senior director of programs for the Society of Health and Physical Educators or SHAPE, says, "You should not be graded on how fast you can run a mile. The grading scheme should be based on the process, not the product. "(Amos) However, even if the grading scale is consistent, it can often be sugar coated or graded on a curve. (Cicero) The GPA is the number that reflects upon your academic performance and can affect scholarships, college admissions, and job opportunities. (Liberman, 36) How fast you can run a mile does not have anything to do with academics. Even a college exam has nothing to do with gym class, the standard based college exam, called ACT, assesses English, math, science, and reading. (Finn and Wright, 22-23). However, failing in gym or any other class will bring your GPA down, which still affects college admissions, no matter the
