Jace Neeb Mrs. Albright Writing 8C 9 February 2023 World War II DBQ World War II was the world's deadliest battle with over 80 million casualties. World War II was a six year war that the major countries of the world fought in. The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima killing 135,000 people. Leaders around the world still debate whether the atomic bomb was a necessity or not. It was a military necessity to drop the atomic bomb on hiroshima. The first reason is it ended the war quickly, and saved more lives in the end. Japan was very large and if the Americans invaded it, many of them would’ve died (Doc. E). So if they didn't drop the catastrophic bomb, more Americans would have died. Secondly, Japanese people were willing to do anything to win the war like kamikaze attacks (Doc. C). “In these kamikaze attacks, more than 3,000 ruthless Japanese pilots were killed, and there were more than 7,000 casualties among American, Australian, and British personnel (OI/http://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/first-kamikaze-strikes). This quote shows just how much japan was willing to do. …show more content…
For example, the attack on pearl harbor was very uncalled for because the U.S. wasn’t even in the war yet (Doc. A). In the attack on Pearl harbor, Japan took down 19 U.S. Navy ships, including 8 battleships (OI/https://www.census.gov/history/pdf/pearl-harbor-fact-sheet-1.pdf). Also, the Japanese people tortured and killed 5200 innocent American soldiers in the Philippines Cruel “March of Death” (Doc. B). In concentration camps and POW’s, the Japanese people were torturing many Americans and doing more terrible things. In an interview with Harry S. Truman said he had to make a decision between saving Japanese people or Americans (Doc. I). Of course like any person would, he chose his own country. To recap it was necessary because of the things the Japanese were doing to
The era following the Second World War was marked by a dramatic change in the world order as countries across Africa, Asia, and Central America underwent independence movements that completely upended their political systems. The war had left the world in shambles and the widespread beliefs in Social Darwinism and the concept of a ‘superior race’ that were originally used to justify European rule in foreign areas were challenged. The political climate also changed over the span of World War 2, especially in the weakening of the imperial power’s rule as well as the newfound sense of nationalism that had been sparked in dozens of countries. People wanted change to happen in their country and supported leaders and organizations that pursued independence
17 million deaths was how WWI ended and the treaty of Versailles that came soon after that was supposed to help make peace helped start a secondary war. In Europe not long after WWI ended on November 11, 1918 the Versailles Treaty was being made with leaders from the countries involved in the war such as France, England, the US. But, Germany was deliberately excluded. This essay will address the question of how the Versailles Treaty helped cause World War II. The Treaty of Versailles helped cause World War II by treating Germany harshly.
On November 11, 1918, the 11th day of the 11th month, Germany signed an armistice, ending what was called by the people the War to end all Wars. Little did they know, World War 2 would break out only years later. The rise of Adolf Hitler, a German Politician, led to the outbreak of World War 2. Hitler created the idea of Lebensraum, a German living space, which fired up the German people. With the support of his people, Hitler rearmed the German military, which went against the terms of the Treaty of Versailles.
Their brutality is shown through their military tactics and strategies before and throughout the war. For example, The United States naval base, Pearl Harbor, was bombed by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, resulting in over 2,400 Americans dead (Doc. A). The United States wasn’t planning to join the war and wasn’t prepared for the attack, displaying the merciless character of the Japanese military. The Japanese also staged savage Kamikaze attacks and put U.S
They had the choice to save their people from the destructive consequences of battle, but instead they chose to keep fighting a war they had already lost (Doc. I). The Japanese refused the ultimatum because Hirohito “resisted facing reality and never acted resolutely”(OI/ history.com). In other words, the Japanese government wasn't facing the facts, and wished to continue in a war that would largely damage their cities, population, and any hope of being successful. Instead, they went on with fighting, which ended with them losing two of their major cities and an increased number of civilian casualties. As you can see, the decision to drop the atomic bombs was justified due to the fact that the Japanese weren't going to stop, so we needed to end
It was a military necessity to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For starters, it was a war necessity to drop the atomic bomb was because it ended the war faster. It got them to surrender instead of continuing to fight. The atomic bomb was called, “ The Winning Weapon” because it forces the other country to surrender (OI). “We have used it to shorten the agony of the war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans” (Doc I).
The atomic bomb was absolutely necessary. It was the end of WW2, Americans deserved revenge, and thousands of lives were saved. The atomic bomb was a brutal weapon that could wipe out entire populations and ignite devastation. The Japanese did not need a revolutionary weapon to cause destruction
Japan also attacked the U.S ships in the Pacific Theater using Kamikaze pilots (Doc. C). Japan also showed the U.S they were willing to kill themselves and sacrifice their own people to destroy Americans. The U.S offered an ultimatum but Japan refused it and didn’t accept the terms (Doc. I). In the same way as the ultimatum, there were also many warnings. At the point in the war before the droppings, surrendering was a clear option.
In 1945 the United States was faced with an extremely difficult decision, this decision would bring a beginning to the “nuclear age” and end world war 2 but was it worth it. The decision to drop the atomic bombs on Japan is thought to have been done to prevent the loss of an estimated 200,000 American troops; the bombs were an alternative to occupation/invasion . The first crucial point to consider is the alternative options available to the United States to achieve victory in the Pacific Theater; the two primary Alternatives were a full-scale invasion of Japan or a Prolonged blockade. Both of these options would have likely resulted in Far higher casualties on both sides and an invasion of Japan would have exposed countless soldiers to brutal Warfare, leading to a catastrophic loss of life.
“On august 6, 1945, during World War II (1939-45) an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing a total of over 120,000.” [History.com] Today, it is highly debated whether it was necessary for the US to drop the atomic bomb. I believe dropping the atomic bomb was the right decision for the United States. The reasons for this stance will be argued under the topics of self-defense and limiting total damage.
From a first-hand fighter, Eugene Sledge stated,“ If you tried to help one of the Japanese, he’d usually detonate a grenade and kill himself as well as you.” This signifies that Japan would never give up during the war, and if they had to, they would kill someone on the spot if it meant another step forward for their country. Even so, the Japanese were starting to fall, every moment soldiers were dying and they didn’t know if they would even get to see the next day. On the other hand, America was in danger. They didn’t know Japan's next move and they knew they didn’t want to find out.
Was the Atomic Bomb Necessary? It was necessary for the United States to drop the atomic bomb on Japan. Truman’s decision to do this was because of the american lives, the Pearl Harbor in general, and bringing an end to it all. This all began when Japan attacked the Pearl Harbor and, for precautions, the U.S. Interned Japanese people here in our country.
In the twentieth century, the United States dropped two atomic bombs, which were the most powerful weapons at that time, on Japan. It happened on August 6 and August 9, 1945. The atomic bombs killed 226,000 Japanese and ended the war. However, America should not have dropped the atomic bombs for two reasons. First, it was not necessary to drop the bomb to win the war militarily or to get the Japanese to surrender.
Hitler was the main aggressor during 1939 who everyone appeased to, who is infamously known for his rise to power, his persecution of Jews, and his attacks on the world to dominate, that killed so many. Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister, believed in the policy of appeasement and appeased Hitler at the Munich Conference which eventually lead to the start of World War II. The Western Powers responded to aggression with appeasement, and in 1939 the world was plunged into World War II, proving to the world that collective security is a better response to aggression. Hitler’s aggression was the main reason why Allied powers felt the need to appease. In 1930, after the Reichstag fire, Adolf Hitler rose to power because he was appointed
The US decision to drop atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 has generated much controversy over the years. Some argue that the bombing was necessary to end World War II, while others believed that more than 200,000 civilians died in vain. The use of this disastrous weapon caused a split in society which came down to the usage being necessary for the victory of the Allied Powers as well as stopping more Japanese crimes or a merciless crime that greatly injured an already kneeling, surrendering nation and caused mass innocent deaths. Due to previous Japanese actions, the dropping of the atomic bomb was justified and needed to be done to protect Americans and other countries oppressed by the Japanese.
