Wrongs of Society
Unfortunately in today's society, elderly people are mistreated along with handicapped people seen as unfit and useless. In Steinbeck's novel, they show a great deal of unfairness to both humans and animals when they are no longer useful or productive to society. Although, older generations helped raise us, in society we generally do not take care of them. Animals are put down, or killed when they no longer have a purpose to their owner. Also, in the novel handicaps are looked down on because they take time to care for and are not seen as good workers. Because people or animals no longer provide a “use” for their family or owners, they are mistreated. However, they have helped and contributed to their families in every way they could, so to mistreat them later in their life is wrong and unfair.
Older adults are responsible for bringing about their children or sometimes your great grandchildren. Sometimes they’re not even related and still help raise a child. However, they are still mistreated. Thousands of families have sent their own relatives to retirement or nursing homes. According to Nursing Home Diaries “slightly over 5 percent of the 65+ population occupy nursing homes, congregate care, assisted living, and board-and-care homes, and about 4.2 percent are in nursing homes at any given

They are bought and used for work and are there for many people for companionship. When dogs no longer serve a purpose in terms of work, they are usually euthanized. For example, in the novel Of Mice and Men this is seen when Carlson tells Candy to kill his dog because he no longer helps out on the farm. “He don’t have no fun and he stinks to beat hell. Tell you what. I’ll shoot him for you. Then it won’t be you that does it,” (Steinbeck, 45). Because the dog is old and smells bad, Carlson wants to kill him. Carlson explains that he will kill the dog in the same way that George kills Lennie later on in the
Many people are supported in their homes by people who work along side the health and social care service such as social workers, nursers ,doctor and care givers or they may get support from their family members and friends. An elderly person may choose to stay in their own homes instead of a residential care home while seeking help and support from others, however this can lead to potential opportunities for abuse happening to the person who Is being looked after. When an individual is getting support at home by a carer, the individual being cared for is vulnerable and defenseless and therefor this makes them a target for abuse, another example is abuse by strangers, when an elderly person lives alone they are at risk of people calling at the door and then gaining access to their homes, they may steal items from them or mistreat them or cause intimidation. A person who is vulnerable and living alone are at risk of physical and sexual because there is no one there to stop this abuse from happening.
In the classic American novel Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, power is a recurring theme. Most of the characters have direct ties to power, whether it is physical, social, economic, or intellectual. But the author balances their powers with flaws. Lennie, a main character, has a lot of physical power. Yet due to his mental disability, he does not understand the consequences of his actions.
The Great Depression caused an abundance of hardships for the American people. Those who were wealthy lost much of their fortune, and those who were poor lost everything they had. However, white men lived a relatively easier life compared to women and those of color. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses Curley’s wife as a symbol of oppression. This character’s purpose is to show the inferiority which women were looked to with and the objectification that they were forced to put up with.
Throughout the novel Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck’s use of symbolism, characterization, and imagery demonstrate the cruel instincts of mankind. Man’s cruelty to man is and will be prevalent in society, therefore Steinbeck’s
Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities Assisted living facilities are one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. Unfortunately, assisted living facilities have a history of being problematic. Specific cases from the movie Life and Death in Assisted Living Facilities indicates that assisted living facilities are often under staffed, poorly trained, and often admit elderly patients who are not qualified candidates for their facilities (Byker and Thompson, 2013). When taking this in to account, it is important to consider why families may admit their loved ones in to assisted living facilities.
George describes Lennie honestly, but it shows the cruel side of humanity by pointing out Lennie’s weaknesses and his inability to fix them. Steinbeck’s tone sets up a very honest and cruel world that man lives in Steinbeck’s use of
There are many human rights in "Of Mice And Men." Some rights include right to economic opportunity. A right to a fair wage, and a right to medical assistance for those with special needs. I think the author's main message was the right to be treated equal even if mentally disabled. " A guys goes nuts if he ain't got nobody.
In Of Mice And Men there are so many human rights problems that it makes me wonder how did some people go from dirt poor to wealthy. The main human right problem in Of Mice And Men is that Lennie can’t get the healthcare that he needs because he is poor. After reading the novel and doing some research I have found a solution to this human rights problem that can help lots of people and could help Lennie. The solution I have found is that the government could tax people a little bit more than they are normally taxed and in return the government can use that money to inform people about people with mental illnesses and the government can also about up healthcare buildings so people can go get the health care that they need and deserve.
Chapter Five Constructed Response John Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” was inspired by Robert Burn ’s poem “To a Mouse.” This means his novel has a similar meaning to Burn’s poem: animals have no dreams, but still experience melancholic feelings along with the human dreamers. The title “Of Mice and Men” is also a quote straight out of “To a Mouse.”
In the novel “Of Mice and Men” John Steinbeck portrays the theme of social injustice throughout the story in the lives of several characters that include Lennie, Curley’s Wife, and the stable buck, Crooks. All of these characters are mistreated in some way, shape or form. The hardships that these characters faced help guide us to see the social injustice that is prevalent in the story. Lennie is a victim of social injustice due to the fact that he is mentally disabled. He is not treated fairly when he was accused of rape.
The book Of Mice and Men is full of puzzling examples of the human condition, from Lennie and his mental disability to Curley only caring about his social appearance. With characters like these two, the book exploits the human condition that concerns circumstances life has given you. John Steinbeck brings to life what being a laborer in the American depression meant to the men and one woman who had enough personality to stand out. Steinbeck shows the human condition of men while they survive in the American depression.
Maturity, a long debated question, of the level of matureness or integrity a person has. Age plays a role in maturity but experiences mature a person much as they understand the world in which they live in. Age does not determine the level of maturity in person because . Maturity does not rely on age but more to a person’s mentality level. Mentality level plays a role in maturity because it shows the mental abilities of a person.
While reading, I have caught onto many morals. Steinbeck, the author of the novel, Of Mice and Men, has engaged many readers throughout his written morals. Referring to one of my favorite morals from the novel, Steinbeck educates how the reader should not have their own situation decided from another. As for an example, the isolated character, Candy, who experienced having his own decision settled for him by the character, Carlson. What Steinbeck conveys is that when your decision is made from another, he's meaning that the reader has to decide for their own situation because it's their life.
The novel contains different themes which help to present Steinbeck’s view of social issues during the Great Depression. From idealism to reality, alienation and loneliness, prejudice and discrimination, “meanness” and class conflict, race and racism, “handiness” in violence and sex, women and sexism. However, the American Dream and loneliness are without doubt the main themes in Of Mice and Men, in parallel with social fitness. How can ageing, weak or physically & mentally disabled humans and animals fit into
Elder abuse can be referred to as a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person. Elderly people often get abuse by people who should be their protector and carer, in most circumstances many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and even in facilities responsible for their care. If you suspect that an elderly person is at risk from a neglectful or overwhelmed caregiver, or being preyed upon financially, it’s important to speak up. Learning about the warning signs of elder abuse, what the risk factors are, and how you can prevent and report the problem it’s very vital in protecting the elderly from abuse, some of these abuse are; • Not caring for someone property (neglect) • Pressuring
