Swinging Through Time
Pianist Barry Harris, seated right, mentored many a younger Detroit musician at the Blue Bird and elsewhere before pulling up stakes for New York to join Julian (Cannonball) Adderly in 1960. Harris continues today as a prime exponent of the Bud Powell school of piano players, as one of the fine interpreters of the music of Thelonious Monk, and as one of the few jazz musicians to mine gold from theme song to "I Love Lucy." At the far left is bassist Vishnu Wood. Seated next to Harris is saxophonist Ira Jackson. |
