Swinging Through Time
Trumpeter Donald Byrd’s long and varied musical career began in Detroit where he often collaborated with saxophonist Pepper Adams. In addition to performing and recording, Byrd has taught at a number of universities, including Howard, where he headed the black music department and fashioned a student ensemble into the succesful recording act the Blackbyrds. After years working in fusion, in the ’90s he veered back to the acoustic jazz on which he initially built a robust reputation. Detroiter Louis Hayes is on drums; Junior Cook on saxophone. |
