Swinging Through Time

Horace Silver, Junior Cook, and Gene Taylor on stage

The other side of the Blue Bird stage the same night in 1959 as the prior shot. Pianist Horace Silver is in his characteristically intense crouch at the piano. During the ’50s and ’60s, Silver recruited a series of Detroiters for his groups, including drummers Louis Hayes and Roy Brooks, bassist Doug Watkins, trumpeter Donald Byrd and saxophonist Joe Henderson (not a native Detroiter, but a one-time student at Wayne State who was adopted into the Detroit jazz fraternity). Junior Cook on saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass.
