Queen of the Blues Dinah Washington was a favorite of Detroit audiences and developed a coterie of followers in the city after she married football star Dick (Night Train) Lane and moved to Motown. An outsized talent who swung her blues with power, sensitivity and attitude galore, Washington had a flair for the outrageous, including her comment during a trip to England that there was only one queen — and Elizabeth was an impostor.
