Swinging Through Time

About W. Kim Heron

I’ve been involved with jazz since my first round of college in the early ’70s, so I suppose it makes sense to be pushing the music in a second college-go-round as a masters student in the School of Information here at the University Michigan.

I’ve written about jazz for the Lansing State Journal and the Detroit Free Press, been an MC at events including the Montreux-Detroit Jazz Festival, for the last seven years or so hosted the show "Destination Out" on WDET-FM Detroit (at 101.9 from 7-10 Su nday nights), and for the last couple months been a sometimes co-host on WTVS-TV’S "Backstage Pass" (Channel 56, Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.). My photos have been included in the Jazz Alliance of Michigan show "Michigan Jazz Legends," and in the last year I’v e been a featured poet at the Broadside Poets Theater and the Detroit Public Library. I’ve played percussion with Greg (Vibrations) Williams and had a small part on the first Was (Not Was) record.

A big part of my life over the last two years has been the strike (now a lockout) of workers at the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press. My involvement has included work at the Detroit Sunday Journal, a weekly publication of workers fighting for contract s and justice. Some of the material on the strike can be found on-line in the Detroit Journal. You can find links to a few of my jazz articles for the Journal at my Neverhome Page.

Bryan Blank and I expect to continue to build on this exhibit at some point in the near future. Your comments and feedback are both welcome and appreciated.
