St. Helena Island Light
“St. Helena Island, Michigan”
Built: 1873
Automated: 1923
“After being automated in 1923 (by a rather unusual method using metal rods that expanded and contracted by the heat of the sun) this light’s structure was basically left to decay, until the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association and the Boy Scouts of America began a restoration project in 1989. Today, it sits as a testament to what can be done in lighthouse restoration. (Photo 2005, Trip #46)”
