The article “Political Rhetoric, Immigration Attitudes, and Contemporary Prejudice: A Mexican American Dilemma” by Robert Short and Lisa Magana starts by explaining what social construction theory means. They explain that social construction theory is how individuals are perceived and characterized by the large culture. Sometimes the way these individuals perceive comes with stereotypes that either positive or negative. The article talks about those in power receive greater proportion the resource and is perceive in a better light. This only because they have political power, and they are the lawmaker within the society.
Throughout the book, social location plays a big role in how the social construct is developed, categorizing those into such lower class.
a. Race appears because people’s identities are assigned through it. This is a means of distinguishing a group and a means of control over it. The essence of society is that a small number of people exploit most people in the name of the development of human civilization, and race is the most powerful political weapon for them. b. Social construction is something or an event that is a meaningful to the society, it reveals how the social is constructed and how people are participating in it. c. Money is a kind of social construction, people accept the value of money and consider them as an essential part of the society.
Genocide can be defined as acts of mass violence with the intent to damage or eliminate a whole based on ethnicity, race, or sometimes religion. A social construct is a theory that things are made from human interaction and understanding. Race and ethnicity can both be categorized as a social construct because they vary by culture, by geography, and how people classify or identify them. Many anthropologists study not only social constructions, but also the effect they have on the world. Genocide is one example of how social constructions can be perceived as dangerous to humankind.
After watching the video “people like us”, I believe that class is made by large number of people with similar economic status or position. On the other hand, you can find people who try to fit in upper social class i.e. “Tammy’s Story”. Tammy lives with her four children’s in a trailer. She works as janitor in a local burger shop. Her job helps her pay the bills.
World War II officially began September 1st, 1939. Most countries were involved in the war except for a few neutral countries. Countries that were allies with Germany in World War II were Italy and Japan. Their plans were to conquer neighboring countries and expand their growing empire. Bigger countries like Great Britain, France and The Soviet Union (that was Russia a long time ago) were fighting against them to stop their terror.
The attempt for sociologist to advocate for the removal of racial categories in society would be grueling, there would be many subjects to consider. To remove racial lines is to hold every person to an equal standard. Destroying social construction which was built hundreds of years ago would in fact erase what the country was constructed on. There would be different views on taking away racial lines, being both positive and negative. How would these social changes come about in society?
Social structure is the organized and continuous connection between positions in a social systems. Two positions that I hold within the social structure are my ethnicity Cuban and working class. My positions has influenced my experiences in the following two secondary social institutions: family and education. Being Cuban has influenced my experiences within family by straining my relationship with my father. In Cuban culture, some norms are derived from machismo.
Unfortunately society is still categorizing people based on their race. As a society and as individuals we develop while growing up directions in what we think about the different races, which lead us to our own opinion what we have. They don’t realize it but behavior like that bring consequences with it. Social construction in races was created by society I recording to defend the inequality in our country. To treat a person based on their skin color differently shouldn’t be happening, but we as a society did assigned and created those different treatment/values in a person and how to interact with others.
Social class is a group of people with similar levels of wealth, influence, and status. Four common social classes informally recognized in many societies are upper class, middle class, working class, and the lower class. The higher the social class, thus the higher income level. Whether class is related to deviant labeling depends on the type of deviance involved. Basically, lower class teenagers are just as likely as their upper class peers to engage in victimless deviant acts such as drug use, drunkenness and truancy.
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.

Social constructionism Social constructionism places emphasis on the idea that reality is a product of the knowledge and perceptions that a group of people agree upon. It focuses on the construction of reality within groups (Robideau, 2008). For instance the meaning of what constitutes femininity may be similar across different South African cultures. This may serve as a guide for the South African communities, however with the progression of time, it is evident that the notion of femininity has evolved, which shows that reality is constructed through human relationships and interaction, and can change from time to time (Robideau, 2008).
In today’s world, it could be argued that one simply needs to look at the ways in which a person decorates their home and possessions that they choose to display in order to determine what social class they belong to. This theory can be reflected in our society today, and remains to be a subject and concept studied. The book “Watching the English; the Hidden Rules of English Behaviour” written by Kate Fox discusses how social classes are distinguished in modern day England. Fox discusses humorously how markers of class are everywhere in today’s world and that our classes can be noted through analysing which shops we choose to visit, what we purchase, and what we choose to display to others. Fox uses cars as an example, and states that the car we own is chosen to reflect our social standing.
