The beginning of the 16th century brought with it the Reformation. The Catholic Church became challenged by Martin Luther and John Calvin. With nailing of the 95 theses on the Church doors, Luther began the Protestant Reformation. The counter-reformation was introduced in Europe to weaken the Protestant Reformation and rebuild the power of the Catholic Church through education, clergy reform, and spreading of the Catholic faith. The counter-reformation can be additionally seen as a political movement because of the loss in revenue in the Baltic provinces.
The Renaissance, Religious Reformations, religious wars, and oversea expansions lead to changing attitudes in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries. The Protestant Reformation raised the status of women, but at the same time reformers like Martin Luther believed women should be domestic figures and stay out of the public area. As a result of the strong religious feelings from the Reformations, people became insecure with certain women, like widows and midwives, and developed the idea that they were witches and conferring with the devil. This insecurity and confusion launched the Great European witch-hunt. A witch-hunt is the searching for witches, which often resulted in the trial and persecution of women allegedly practicing witchcraft.
This religion believes in the art of reincarnation, which is being reborn into another creature. Hindus believe in multiple gods, but the most important one is Brahma, the Hindu God of creation. They also believe in karma, a law of cause and effect by which an individual creates their own destiny by their actions. According to Document 7, Hinduism is constructed by a caste system that is also followed in India. The system divides Hindus into hierarchical groups based on their karma and duties.
Although Buddhism originated in the sixth century B.C.E, it quickly spread to China by the first century C.E. Buddhism was both accepted and adopted by many, but also opposed by just as many at the same time. Still some Chinese citizens chose to neither fully adopt or fully oppose the religion, but rather incorporated unique Chinese traditions into Buddhism and also created new traditions from it. Buddhism’s spread in China was met with many different responses. However, the mix of responses could be due to the fact that Buddhism’s arrival fell in the middle of a period of instability for China. Documents 2 and 3 are both in favor of Buddhism.
Throughout the Reformation, most people in England voiced their discontent with the corrupted practices from Rome and many also believed that bishops should be abolished altogether (Reasons for Settlement). This, as well as the religious persecution threatened to them by Queen Mary I, caused the puritans, and protestant-like groups, to leave England in search of a place to practice their religions freely. This sparked their willingness to leave, for hopes that they would find a truer religion elsewhere and so they left with inspiration for the new world (Reasons for Settlement). As Siddhartha finally finds his enlightenment after a long years of searching, the historical Buddha’s also finds his enlightenment. After his negative experience with the self-denial of the world and the body, he suddenly comes to a realization that one must live life the way he or she is destined to live. He also believes that a teaching or religion can only help guide a person to the right path; but it is the person’s decision to find his or her own enlightenment on their own. “He did not force His followers to be slaves either to His teachings or to Himself, but granted complete freedom of thought and admonished His followers to accept His words not merely out of regard for Him but after subjecting them a thorough examination…”12 This set of teaching is compelling to me because the historical Buddha learns that one must live life their own way in order to find their own peace and happiness.
Throughout an individual’s entire lifetime, they will frequently receive guidance from mentors that assist them through uncertainties and difficulties they encounter along their path. This act of mentoring is enhanced by passing on traditional customs and “storytelling” the individual of past teachings that enrich their understanding of their own identity. The initial feelings of ignorance and unfamiliarity of an individual’s own identity are later transitioned into feelings of humbleness and respect once the individual thoroughly embraces their identity. The aspects and the motives of the crusades have caused heated debates where historians are determining the major motives of the Crusades. The Crusades were primarily caused by religious devotion, political gain and economic benefit. The question was that, which of the two factors had served as more of a catalyst. The Crusades were constructed on the basis of devoting to the religion of Christianity and leaders protecting their people and the future of their empire and leadership. Despite there being two motives, the aspect of religious devotion outweighs political gain and economic benefits.
The spiritual aspect of Hinduism shows the overbearing power of the “Brahman”. The Brahman also known as the World Soul comes from the sacred text of the Bhagavad Gita given to Lord Krishna. The Brahman is ones deepest self, the identity that remains beneath one’s changing self (Griffen). In Hinduism, this God is the basis of all creation, and all power worshipped in the religion. The Brahman lies at the root of all who show devotion to other gods.

Everyone suffers. This simple fact of life has plagued humans for centuries, perplexing the wisest thinkers down to the most common among us. It demands an explanation, and history has granted us many - often in the form of religion. Buddhism revolves around the concept of suffering, attempting to explain its origin and how to break free of it. It teaches that no matter how righteous a person acts, they will always suffer until they fully achieve enlightenment.
