1.1 The function of assessment is to ensure that learning is taking place.
It measures the learner’s skills, knowledge and learning pattern/styles.
Its main purpose is to assess and measure a learners understanding of the subjects against the anticipated outcomes set by the criteria.
It is also used to measure a learner’s ability to perform skills set against a set standard which can help to identify what skills the learner already has, as well as identifying any gaps in skills to highlight areas that needs more work on.
This is done by three types of assessment – Initial, Formative and summative assessment.
Initial assessment is carried out before the learner starts the qualification or at the first meeting to get to know the learners existing level of knowledge and experience. This is also helpful to recognize any areas the learner may need additional support.

Summative assessment is usually done at the end of a unit or course. This is to sum up everything the learner has learnt to allow progression to the next stage or for completion and achieving their certificate.

Assessment in learning and development plays a key role in any education as it allows the assessor to keep track of learner’s work they have completed or completing which then can allow for targets to be set for the learner. This is where the assessment cycle comes in – Plan, do, review.
