Almost all the packed food products that I see today at the grocery stores have some claims mentioned on their labels such as “no trans fat”, “less sugar”, “more fiber”, “antioxidant rich” etc. Some of them also claim for the product being good for heart and immune system. I had always blindly trusted these words on the food labels and bought them thinking that whatever it says on the label is 100% true and the packet contains exactly what it claims for. But the article “10 Mega trends in the Supermarket” by Bonnie Liebman has totally surprised me by revealing the true meaning of some of these food trends in the food industry. This means that I will be consuming a good amount of trans fat if I had multiple servings. In addition, food companies were bound to disclose transfat on the food labels. So they started eliminating transfat for marketing purposes, but at the same time replaced it with high amount of saturated fats. Replacing trans fat with saturated fats does not add any health benefit because both are risk factors for heart diseases. Furthermore, I buy packs of multigrain flour every month because I eat flat bread for my meals everyday. When I read multigrain flour, I assumed that there are additional grains added to the product besides wholewheat which is good for health. I did not think that it could be mostly refined grain with a little proportion of whole grains added as described in the article. Similarly, some products which says “wholegrain” means only 51% wholegrain. This made me think that I am not eating completely what I desire to eat, but there is always an admixture. In addition, I always look for products that says “high fiber” on the label. One of my family members suffers constipation and is prone for diverticula formation because of her age. The
