The writer of the movie “10 Things I Hate About You” brought in very good key points about each of the characters. He was able to modernize the characters of Taming of the Shrew, written by William Shakespeare, yet still keep some of the similarities between the characters and the relationship of the characters true to the play. He also set differences about the characters in the movie, making a few more caring than they were presented in the play. There are similarities and differences between Petruchio and Katherine and the movie version of them, such as, their personalities and actions and their relationship with each other. However, Petruchio is not just mean on the outside, but also on the inside. He has no boundaries and he is a cruel human being. He hits people, manipulates Katherine by starving and sleep depriving her, so that she will obey his every single word, and he shows no remorse for his actions. Now, Patrick on the other hand is not a whole lot better, but his journey is what makes his situation and characteristics different than Petruchio’s. Although he does not hit people: he ends up using Katherine for money, but along the way he starts to develop feelings for her and starts feeling guilty and remorseful for his actions. The mindset of how someone thinks can really determine their actions towards others. The Katherines’ in both the movie and the play were tough on the outside, but once they are broken down and manipulated, it is shown that they have a soft interior. Their father was rich making guys think it was okay to manipulate them in order to gain riches. Both have been used by guys, but the differences of how they act after they are dating or married to the guy is where the diversity of the two characters come into play. Katherine from the play, does not ever love the man she is married to, instead she is practically used as a puppet by him.
