The book, The Achievement Habit, by Bernard Roth chapters five, seven and eight, and the movie 12 Angry men, have a lot in common. Chapter five is about taking a chance, flipping the script, or making the change. Chapter seven is about being open to other people’s ideas, making sure everyone is committed and have the same goal. Chapter eight is about self-image by design, one question you can ask yourself is who are you solving the problem for. In the movie 12 Angry Men, all of the jurors believe the child is guilty except one. The one man who believes that the child is not guilty is the one who changes everyone’s mind. It is about getting everyone to agree on the same goal and make sure no one feels unsure about their decision. Juror number eight was the first one to vote not guilty. Juror number 9 was the next person to vote not guilty, he said the reason he changed his vote was because he wanted to hear juror number eights point of view on why he thought that way. After they had went over all the facts all the jurors started to change their minds. According to filmsite, the order in which the jurors changed their votes were, juror 8, 9, 5, 11, 2, 6, 7, 12, 1, jurors 4 and 10 changed their minds at the same time, and juror number 3 was the last one to vote not guilty.
In chapter eight of the book, Roth talks about if someone grew up in a supportive and loving home you are more likely to be happy and driven. But if someone grew up in a new threatening and harsh environment they are more likely to be angry and sad. The child in the movie grew up in a harsh and threatening home, his mom died when he was young and his father was abusive. None of the jurors wanted to look that deep into things, except juror eight. Even though the child grew up in a threatening and abusive home it doesn’t mean he killed his father, the child might’ve been mad at his dad but it doesn’t mean he did
