This particular deaf event was held on Friday, December 2 at 8 p.m. at the Art House Production, 136 Magnolia Ave., Jersey City. This show titled “Twelve Dates of Christmas”, was a one woman show, performed by a Ginna Hoben, who lost her leg in a car accident. The show also had an American Sign Language interpreter, and an audio describer for the blind. The show was about a character named Mary, and her unlucky streak when it came to dating. Every time she had a failed date, or the man was just not a good fit, an ornament would appear on the tree. The show itself was very enjoyable and I genuinely enjoyed it, partly because the actress herself seemed to have a great time acting, and also because the show kept me interested. I like the fact she didn’t see her disability as a negative, but as a positive, and how the accident didn’t change her life goals or her perspective on life. Even though she lost a leg, her handicap didn’t seem to bother her but in fact make her a stronger individual. This event also touched home for me, because my mother is also physically disabled, after she got into a car accident almost 8 years ago. The sign language was so on point, that you could watch the interpreter and not fall behind on what was happening in the play. I only wish I practiced more on reading sign language at a faster speed, so that I too could have enjoyed it from my perspective, and from the perspective of a deaf person. There was also an audio describer, who described every action happening in the show. It took some time to get used to having someone tell you what was happening as it was happening, but I got adjusted to it. Even when I looked away from the stage for a second, I still knew what was happening thanks to the audio
