Minimum wage has always been a difficult topic to talk about in political situations with questions about increasing or decreasing it forever on the ballot. In today’s economic state there has been an increase of the minimum wage in several states such as California; which has caused a debate on the national level of how much the lower class can live on. In Barbara Ehrenreich’s book she tries out low wage living and documents it in Nickel and Dimed, in her opinion it's barely possible to survive on low wages for even one person. To show this she employs conversational and concrete diction to show the difficulties of living two lives that are at different poles of the economic scale and the ignorance of both classes to those besides themselves with a confusion of audiences.
My father used to always say that, “If you got Congress in a room together, they’d talk about everything but what was actually important,” and it’s on a similar note that William Finnegan, a longtime contributor to the New Yorker, begins his piece. In Demonizing the Minimum Wage, which first appears in the online version of the New Yorker magazine, Finnegan dives head first into his argument, claiming that the federal minimum wage, which as of September 2014 was $7.25 an hour, is simply not enough. Through the implementation of logical references, subtle emotional appeals and several credible sources, William Finnegan efficiently argues that the current federal minimum wage is too low. Throughout his article, Finnegan uses several logical
The haphazard “pointing of the finger”, which is often found in rhetorical arguments, perpetuates the grand scheme of poor versus wealthy, powerless versus powerful, and minimum wage employee versus big bad restaurant executive. Although this is presented in a professional manner, and with suppressed indignation towards restaurant chains, the basic ideology held by the author is implanted in the minds of the readers. The author successfully does exactly what any written rhetorical piece sets out to do, convince others of an opinion through persuasive
The meaning of “Minimum Wage Rage” shows very common opinions about raising the minimum wage. It shows the customer, who is unhappy that he has to pay that much for a burger, the employees who will be happy that they are now making double their previous wage, and the company and what solutions to come up with do deal with having to pay their employees twice as much. For example, McDonalds response to raising the minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour was to install touch screen computers that customers will order on, then there will be no need for the cashiers. At first it would be a loss for their company because of the initial cost, but it would eventually pay for itself since they can lay off all the cashiers, and would only need people
Many Americans suffer from the negative effects of working a minimum wage job and trying to support themselves and their families. Will Perkins of the Richmond Register asserts that if a person works in this country, they should be able to make enough for a living. He also claims that everyone should do what they are good at and get paid enough for it. I agree with Perkins’ assertion about minimum wage and his thoughts, and this idea should be implemented into society. Will Perkins article on minimum wage basically summarizes his opinions on minimum wage.
Do you think Target should raise the minimum wage to $15? I think Target should go ahead with this idea because homes nowadays are very expensive to live in and people need to at least somewhere they can go home to do what your body needs on a regular basis. Many people that are working little jobs like this have to work at least two jobs to not struggle. In an article by Anne D’innocenzio she said “Thousands of workers have protested to call attention to their financial struggles and fight for $15 an hour”. This would help many people to stick with one job so for those single parents that work two jobs they would only have to work one job and not stress about being in their child’s life.
A minimum wage increase from “$7.25 to $10.10 would result in a loss of 500,000 jobs”. ("The Effects of Minimum-Wage Increase on Employment and Family Income”) This claim is better because it shows how raising the minimum wage will decrease job growth instead of increasing it. But, the minimum wage should be increased because increasing will also increase economic activity and spur job growth, decrease poverty, and improvements in productivity and economic growth have outpaced increases in the minimum
The cost of living is a difficult situation that many Americans across the country struggle with today. A heated debate that directly impacts the lives of all citizens is whether or not the price of minimum wage should be increased. Minimum wage is the standard amount of money earned for executing a basic skill job. Some people hold strong beliefs on why enlarging minimum wage is a major downfall, while others think this process is extremely beneficial. The following paragraphs will discuss the pros and cons surrounding both sides of this topic and the reasoning that births each one.

The federal has set the minimum wage level to $7.25 on Jan. 1, 2015. In less than a year the index number of the minimum wage is going up automatically with cost of living. If America raises the minimum wage to $9.00, it will help people in need or in poverty, but it also won’t hurt people in the workforce. If you increase the minimum wage to $15.00 it will make unemployment rates go high up. Which in the process, makes the homelessness rates go up in the country and in your community. If you keep the minimum wage at $7.25 people will stay in poverty and homeless or on the verge of homelessness.
Minimum wage and poverty With everything going on with the Walmart workers picketing for fifteen dollars an hour wages, the topic is widely discussed with many people taking many different sides. America today is faced with its fair share of problems. There are low employment rates, debt, and inflation everywhere, riddling the economy with issues. There is absolutely no reason that any American citizen should want to pile upon the problem. Yet, some believe that it could be done by raising the federal minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour. Fortunately, history, economics, and common sense prove the minimum wage raise proposition wrong.
Every time the minimum goes up she sees no change in her wage but an increase in prices for food to feed her kids. I’m not saying that an increase is bad, just that we clearly aren’t doing enough research in order to make effective policy. There may not be a perfect answer that makes everyone happy, but there has got to be a more effective way to deal with our issues of poverty and low wages. What we need is better information that’s used properly to make more effective
