A. Identification of Artifact/Evidence:
This assessment was the first test of a Studies in American Literature course taken in the spring of 2014. This course serves as a requirement for Middle School English Language Arts majors and provides an in-depth look into novels by American authors which represent the way of life in past and future America. The course began with a study on the characteristics of southern literature by reading Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. The 150 point test consists of five sections: Matching of dates, vocabulary, and historical facts, fill in the blank speaker identification, short answer on Adventures of Huckleberry Finn quotes, short answer on Ellen Foster quotes, and an essay question discussing the characteristics of the novels that make them “Southern novels.”
I received the full 150 points on this test. My professor, has provided some feedback in the form of check marks throughout the test when answers were replied to sufficiently. This feedback either comes after entire sections like matching or fill-in-the-blank, or on specific questions. This demonstrates that my professor believed my responses were sufficient to achieving the learning objectives.

Although I have read southern novels since the artifact, I have not taken the time to analyze their place as “southern” novels. Instead of just reading books, I will take the time to deeply synthesize what I know about southern culture and how the writing of the book represents this. By reading or in some cases rereading these books, I can have a wider scope of southern literature and a deeper understanding of what makes a piece of literature specific to the southern culture. A list of southern novels I plan to read
