Decision making can overpower the way an individual thinks, especially when true love comes into play. In Grey’s Anatomy, “17 Seconds,” Izzie Stevens demonstrates herself as a tragic hero throughout the episode. In the beginning, Izzie is determined to help her loved one, Denny Dequette, who is struggling with heart failure. Not willing to give up, she tries to get advice from her co-workers, Meredith and Cristina, on how to save Denny. Both Meredith and Cristina told her that he will get the next heart that comes in. Izzie isn’t willing to give up and gets an idea on how to make sure Denny gets the heart. She takes some medical equipment to Denny's room and informs Denny that she needs test results to show he is the most critical of anyone else on the transplant waiting list. However, in “17 Seconds,” Izzie’s vision become clouded and makes her over confident when treating her one true love, Denny. She fits the high-status, noble, and virtuous definition of Aristotle because she is a doctor; regarded as good people with the main purpose of helping and saving people’s lives. However, her major flaw was her confidence that everything would go as planned. When she finds out that Denny was going to get a heart eventually, she realizes to make that happen sooner she would need to make Denny worse than he is now. She came to the conclusion to cut the LVAD wire, causing his heart to stop. Since she’s a doctor, she believes that she can override everything, but this jeopardizes her own job. The hamartia can be identified when she cuts the wire because she puts Denny’s life before anyone else that is patiently waiting for a heart transplant as well. She believes that once she cuts the wire, everything will be better for Denny. However, controlling time and assuming the better for his future makes it worse for
