1920s Art Deco When you think of the 1920s, pictures of flappers, jazz kings, women’s fashion, and those sultry blank-and-white movies might automatically flicker through your mind. But do you ever take a moment to think of the setting for those iconic things? It was not just the people who had style, their surroundings had its own style, too. It was referred to as Art Deco. “Art Deco” originated in Paris, although it was not called Art Deco until 1968 (Duncan 7). Until the name was dubbed as art deco, it was referred to as art moderne (Sennott 69). During the 1920s, many artists traveled to Europe to learn from European artists, and developed inspiration from them (King 134). American Art Deco had its many influences, some being the art created in Japan. Specifically in some art deco style works, “the simple forms and large areas of solid color are reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints” (Glennon). You may be wondering how or why, especially with all the dreams, ideals, time, and money spent on this decade and some of this perfect world of decoration. Since everyone was caught up in the World War II in Europe and North America, no one had the time, the want, or the need to keep decorating (Glennon). Compared to the frantic war atmosphere, these designs of an antique wonderland seemed almost too much, it seemed like a waste. The over-the-top designs were no longer of high importance. So, the rich metals used for embellishments in all the decor were salvaged for military use like weapons and other equipment (Glennon).
