1920’s Film Industry Research Paper The 1920’s was the dawning of the Golden Age of Hollywood. Major film studios practically rose Hollywoodland from the ground up during a time of economic depression. This new lavish world was a place for people to escape reality, drool over stars, and create a fantasy over the extravagant heaven known as Hollywoodland. Extravagant movie theaters or “Picture Palaces” were the embellished gathering place of thousands of Americans during the 1920’s. Usually accompanied by a live orchestra, these theaters would play famous films. Prominent theaters such as the Roxy Theater in New York nicknamed “The Cathedral of Motion Picture” held up to 6,200 people during one showtime. That's astounding to me, motion picture was like the new black in the 20’s. The heart of hollywood remained in hollywoodland with the Chinese theater and the Egyptian theater.("Film”). The “Big Five” or the major film studios during the 20’s, such as Warner Bros and Metro Pictures were the foundation of this new movie era. These studios had a vast amount of impact in the film industry, they owned about 50% of theater seating across america, and had very “elaborate sets for film production”("Film”). Males were not the only Heartthrobs of the time, Clara Bow was the “It Girl”, playing in many famous films like Man Trap, she was also known for being a sex symbol during this time
