1930 &40’s BACKGROUND: In the 1930’s you can see that the fashion was influenced by the climate. In this time there was the Great Depression as a result of World war I. The outfits were therefore somber.(Gibson, J. 2013) Despite being in the midst of an economic crisis you see some of the best fashion innovations during the great depression.(VF Guilde, 2012) New fashion trends came flooding in as a way to look good economically. As stated on the Vintage Fashion Guilde, zippers were introduced instead of using hook and eye closures after 1935. Along with the money crisis there was too a fabric shortage until the end of the decade. As a result, clothes were made with minimal fabric and, no trimmings and few pleats. In the 30’s in the evening it was the bias gown that was the favourite in silk satin or silk velvet, created by Madeleine Vionnet (VF Guilde, 2012). However in the Sears catalog most of the material used is rayon and silk has basically disappeared, this was thanks to WWII (Weisbart, E. 2013). Fashion became even more popular during the 1940’s. During World war two in the early 40’s dresses were knee length and had padded shoulders. Sports wear was also more popular amongst women.
