Throughout the 1960’s and into the mid 1970’s counterculture became a prominent aspect in everyday lives. Peaces signs could be seen everywhere and psychedelic prints became the norm. In the story Go Ask Alice counterculture takes an average middle class American and changes her life forever. 1960’s Counter Culture plays an important part in the story. 1960’s Counterculture dictated the drugs the unknown author used, the places she stayed, the people she met, her views on authority, and even the phrases she used. The biggest and most notable examples come from trademarks of the movement itself.

The main character states that her dad said she should cut her hair because she looks like “one of them anti-establishment folks”. 1960’s counterculture trends included having long hair had this been a different time period having long hair would not have seemed so taboo. In addition to that the main character is an anti-establishmentarian her views in the story often reflect that thinking.
