Breakthrough in 1960s Fashion History The 1960s was a time filled with fun, creativity, and style. The sixties included a variety of events all influenced by culture, including the Vietnam War, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Civil Rights protests, the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and finally the first man on the moon. Unlike all of these events shown in the media time and again, the fashion world was deeply impacted by the culture surrounding it. Many varieties of clothing styles and cuts were created because of this diversity between the cultures. Being the wife of John F. Kennedy gave her some advantages, but her youthful and individual style is what made her an icon to most. One example of her individuality would be her trademark pillbox hat. This hat worn on the back of her head began to overtake traditional bonnets and eventually went viral along with her wraparound sunglasses (green). After Jacqueline Kennedy modeled her various designs and pieces of artwork from different cultures, she inspired many others to dress themselves the way they wanted, expressing their own individuality. Valentino, one of the Italian Designers who inspired Jackie Kennedy, made his unique Italian style a part of the 1960s by using Jaqueline as a model (Muir). Along with bell bottoms, blue jeans, and tee-shirts, the hippies had also created diverse ethnic styles and military and vintage clothes associated in the hippie movement (green). This hippie movement, unlike the previous generations, has included many contrasting styles of street wear (green). During the hippie movement many reacted against the conformity and formality of the previous generations clothing style beginning the upsurge of tee-shirts and blue jeans across the world. Freely expressing your thoughts and feelings out in public without being controlled led individuals to dress themselves to make a
