When you in the hood, joining a gang it's cool because all your friends are in the gang, all your family's in the gang. We're not just killing people every night, we're just hanging out, having a good time.” This sounds like how Ponyboy friends and family are in the Greaser gang and how Bob’s friends and family are in a gang. Some Socs members jumped Ponyboy when he was walking home from the movies.
An Outsiders Look on The Gangs of S.E Hinton’s The Outsiders We Begin with a rivalry between two gangs the Socials and the Greasers. In S.E Hinton’s book The Outsiders these two gangs have their own unique circumstances and opinion that dictate how they make decisions in certain situations and depending on how they act in those situations will dictate how society views them. The community considers one of the gangs a menace to their town. They are considered having no contributing factors to society but in reality they contributed and sacrificed more than the other gang.
Have you ever been discriminated against? In the story “Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton, a young boy named Ponyboy plays as a victim of prejudice. Ponyboy is in middle school, and has an older brother named Dally, who robs gas stations and has been in jail. The area that Ponyboy lives in has two different gangs, The Greasers, and the Socs. Both gangs are different in many ways, which results in conflict.
Ponyboy’s vs the Socs The fiction book the,”The Outsiders,” by S.E. Hilton tells the reader about the ongoing fighting between the west side and the east side in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1965. Hilton writes about a young greaser or east sider and his family fight against the Socs or West siders. In the novel you see ponyboy’s view of the Socs and how it evolves from the beginning of the book to the end.
Entry 1:Passage: “We get jumped by the Socs. I’m not sure how you spell it, but it’s the abbreviation for the Socials, the jet set, the West-side rich kids. It’s like the term “greaser,” which is used to class all us boys on the East Side.” pg 2 Situation: This is still the very beginning of the book and readers are still being troduced to the characters and what their lives are like.
In the story The Outsiders written by S.E Hinton, there are two rival groups/ gangs, the greasers and the Socs. A young boy named Ponyboy explained his journey being a greaser and the sacrifices, consequences, and decisions he had to manage with. This story reminds me of William Shakespeare's story Romeo and Juliet of their similarities which are they gangs, fights, and loyalty and differences that are the wealthiness, behaviors, and between the two books. One of the similarities of the two books is the groups/ gangs, because in Romeo and Juliet there are the Montague and Capulets and in The Outsiders there are the greasers and the Socs. They are both enemies and try to sabotage and fight each other when every they have the chance to.
The West side were the people that didn’t have a say in anything, the people that wanted to be doing something and couldn’t be doing anything. The Greasers were a lower class compared to the SOCS, that made them the outsiders. Now, each gang could be called an outsider as well. To a gang, a different group could be outsiders just as the SOCS though of the Greasers the outcasts of the town.
The societal circumstances in the 1960s that prompted Hinton to write The Outsiders was the social revolution which the Civil Rights movement, LGBT movements, and the radical movements of the student activists. The Civil Rights movement began in the 1960s; the leader of the Congress on Racial Equality launched Freedom Rides to integrate interstate buses and the volunteers rode the buses into Deep South where they faced violence which includes bombings and beatings in Anniston Alabama (History.com Staff). Because of the racial segregation that was going on, that might have influence Hinton to write the book due to the fact that the Black race felt like they were an outsider and had a wall between them and the the rest of the society. This novel by S.E Hinton, The Outsiders shows a crucial point that everybody is special in some way and should be known as who they are individuality not as a group. The Outsiders is a book that describes 2 gangs , the luxurious Socs, and the hoodlum Greasers. While they have conflicts with each other, the protaganist, Ponyboy, finds his identity outside of the gang. The important message of the story is that everyone has a unique personality that are developed by being in a group of people away from home, this identity can shape anyone’s way of life and the path they may take in the future.
