The 1970s were full of events that changed today’s society in more ways than anyone could ever have anticipated. Women gained rights and respect that no one expected through the second wave of feminism (Sisters of ’77 2). The National Women’s Political Caucus began to stimulate the idea of women in politics in 1971, The United States Senate sent the Equal Rights Amendment to the states for ratification in 1972, and the United States Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Military Academy, and Coast Guard Academy admitted the first women in 1976 (1976 Highlights from Pocantico Hills School 1). Organizing women and encouraging them to protest for equal rights helped the feminist movement grow beyond what anyone could have imagined. On August 26, 1970, over 20,000 women gathered together and rallied all over the country to raise awareness for workplace, social, and political equality for females (Shay 1). The strike was over 50 years after the Nineteenth Amendment protest, and the largest women’s protest ever (Shay 1). In the 1970s, women were still paid less for doing the same job as a man and the strike gave them a way to let the world know (Shay 1). The strike was organized by a very one of the founders of the feminist movement, the opinionated feminist, Betty Friedan, who wrote the book that started the modern day feminist movement (Shay 1). The strike was also sponsored by the National Women’s Strike Coalition (Shay 1). In 1973, a foundation called Take Back the Night, TBTN for short, was started when members organized to protest the issue of pornography (TBTH Foundation 1). It was initially created to help stop the abuse of all people all over the world (TBTN Foundation 1). The foundation is now nationwide, it helps stop abuse to both men and women (TBTN Foundation 1). Their mission statement is, “Since the 1970s in the United States, TBTN has focused on eliminating sexual and domestic violence in all forms,” (TBTN Foundation 1). To this day, Take Back the Night is an event where women from many countries get together and discuss the safety of women while walking around public places (TBTH Foundation
