1984, a dystopian, written by George Orwell in 1949, demonstrates if there is an absolute power, an individual has a struggle to gain freedom back. Winston Smith questions the party of Oceania. He has to follow the rules and participate in the rituals, or he will be punished. Internally, he has rebellious thoughts and desires for freedom. Orwell utilizes symbolism and quest for knowledge to depict how Winston outwardly conforms while questioning the party internally. Winston's diary symbolizes his rebellion against the party's lack of individuality and expression. This is the first time he disobeyed the party's rules. The party uses the image of Big Brother to instill a sense of loyalty and fear in the population. This makes the people of Oceania not to disobey and think for themselves. Orwell says, “It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption beneath it reads” (1). This shows the people of Oceania that Big Brother knows what you're doing at all times and causes them to be scared to disobey him. Orwell uses a quest for knowledge by the party to change history, leaving everyone in the dark. Winston remembers when Big Brother was not in control, causing him to question the party. Everyone in Oceania society uses double-think and they are consistently able to change how history is changed. Orwell writes, “And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed-if all records told the same tale-then the lie passed into history and became truth.’Who controls the past,’ ran the party slogan. ‘Controls the future; who controls the present controls the past'” (30).
