As said by George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door to freedom”. In 1984 by George Orwell, the deficit of awareness allows the citizens during this time period to lose their free will. Freedom is not shown throughout the characters in Orwell’s 1984 by fear of thought police, the government's control, and the influence of technology in their everyday lives. The symbolism behind the title thought police, is that they are police officers that stop the citizens from thinking, thinking about anything other than what they are told to do. When Winston is exposed they become scared that, “If the diary is ever found, Winston will be punished, possibly killed, by the Thought Police” (1984 4). The thought police is used throughout the book, as something to be scared of. The physiologic control is through the technology that the government uses to spy on the citizens with. For example, there are always televisions in the homes of the citizens, showing propaganda, which brainwashes them constantly. In the homes, “there are even popular television programmes called 'Big Brother' and 'Room 101'” (1984 6). The televisions only play big brother programs to brainwash and spy on the people, controlling their minds. The physical control that the government had over society was the way that they worked them till they had no desire to rebel, “He had no physical desire;” (1984 20). The government takes advantage of their mental and physical state, and of their privacy. This physical abuse can be connected to the way that people of today work themselves to live as comfortably as they can, and the mental abuse can be connected to the lies and propaganda that is placed onto the
