It is easy to describe simple things like general emotions: when you are happy, sad or angry, and whether you are having a good day or bad day, but the world is not a simple world; it was never a simple world. Why do you tell people you feel good when in reality you feel bad? Why do you tell people the opposite? Why do you flip back and forth between the two? Which one is it? The truth is that you really cannot specifically express the way you are feeling by just using those two words. What you feel is a mix of both, a complex feeling that you cannot find the words to describe and express. This is why we have a numerous variety of word choices or vocabularies. The novel has the setting of a totalitarian system in which all citizens of Oceania lived under a totalitarian regime. The Party was in control of Oceania. There were telescreens mostly everywhere to keep everyone constantly watched and if there were no telescreens, there were voice-recognition microphone bugs to pick up any conversation of those in its surrounding.The Party kept constant surveillance to ascertain control, but they also made their way into the citizens’ language. They wanted to get rid of Oldspeak, so Newspeak was created for the citizens. Good was good, bad was ungood, and very good was plusgood. We could say that the Party was lazy, but that would just be an inference after looking at the Newspeak’s dictionary. The Party had the intention to change Oldspeak to Newspeak because they wanted to take full control over all citizens of Oceania including the language they spoke. Their vocabulary was unbelievably narrowed down to its extremely simplified form. Words were just tools in the society. It was not for making creative expressions. Why would they require many different ways to say the same thing when they could just have one word to express all of it? Taking control over what they spoke was directly related to what they thought. If they controlled their language, they also controlled the way they thought. This was what the Party intended to do. Having small vocabularies can actually affect some people in reverse. They can actually strive for ways in which they can learn more and enhance their vocabularies. Some may yearn to know more because of their curiosity. Their curiosities can be unstoppable to the extent that the Party can no longer keep them bound to their chains of manipulation. People with low vocabulary can still feel more than their words allow them to express. Language is not the only way humans can express themselves and it does not limit what they can feel. They can find other ways to do it besides language. If they cannot express themselves because of their lack of vocabulary, they can express themselves through actions if not
