Many people have had speculations about our society today being compared to the totalitarian society of 1984. The society of 1984 is a society based on totalitarian government known as the Party, and their leader Big Brother always watching its people where they have no individuality. While in our society the government is also watching our every move without us even knowing it. Our society is similar to 1984 because of the shortened language and the common use of technology that tracts everything people do. The first reason our society is the same as 1984’s is because of the shortened language. Syme’s explanation of the Newspeak language shows that the language in 1984 is being shortened. We are also being tracked sort of like the society of 1984 by a smartphone. In an article, “Forget Facebook’s ‘mission’: Big Zucker is watching you!” Niall Ferguson explains how our world is sort of being watched by a telescreen but is really our smartphone. Niall Ferguson quotes, “The smartphone is our telescreen. And, thanks to it, Big Zucker is watching you — night and day, wherever you go. Unlike the telescreen, your phone is always with you. Unlike the telescreen, it can read your thoughts, predicting your actions before you even carry them out” (Ferguson 3). Our society is also “watching you — night and day, wherever you go.” Also “Unlike the telescreen, your phone is always with you” which means it can track you even better than a telescreen does. So basically “your phone is always with you” meaning it will have an even higher rate of “predicting your actions before you even carry them out” and “it can read your thoughts.” This helps explain the idea that our society is like 1984’s society due to the common use of technology used to track us, people,
