In the novel 1984 George Orwell depicts a dystopia with his use of a futuristic setting while incorporating the fear of technology. A dystopia is a society where people lead dehumanization and often fearful lives. In this novel Big brother has too much control, and uses his power to create a world where no one can have their own opinions or even be themselves. The technology in Oceania is constantly being updated and changed, and this is allowing Big Brother to increase the level of surveillance on the people in the town. The people of Oceania are also constantly given something to hate so that they can be distracted from the truth and what’s going on right in front of them. This is done because it is believed that in a totalitarian society there is no room for individuality. In today’s world we the people have the rights and power of speech so we can say and do pretty much anything we please, and express our opinions but for these people of Oceania they do not have that same right. Big Brother has created telescreens which are an invasion of privacy and are put up in people homes so that no member can escape from being watched 24/7. These telescreens monitor what people do so that no one can do anything against the party rules. They have no choice but to do the same thing over and over again every day. Big Brother also invented what is called the “Thought Police” which are a league of law enforcement. These officers are charged with uncovering and punishing “thought crime” and thought criminals. They use the telescreens to search and find members of the society that aren’t following the rules, and the hard part was the members had no way of knowing that they were being watched. They could also get arrested for what is called a “Face crime”
