The concept of the future has been delved into for as long as writers have been writing. The appealing concept about the future is that it will eternally remain a mystery. The future is continuously altering and under no circumstances halting. George Orwell, the author of 1984, ponders on his opinions and beliefs of what the future will hold for others. The world of 1984 is separated into three main class systems: The Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. The Inner Party is the ruler of Oceania; they make policies, judgements and govern. The Inner Party is commonly known as “The Party”. 1984 illustrates the future as a place where The Party has absolute power and controls absolutely everything and everyone. The Party uses propaganda as a lethal weapon of control. Propaganda upsurges the citizens’ morale and causes them believe that what The Party tells them to do is always right. There are primarily two types of propaganda, one changes the truth and another creates fear. “Doublespeak” can be spotted constantly in the world of 1984. “WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENTH.” (4). Since this is presented promptly in the novel, this creed assists as the reader’s initial introduction to the concept of doublethink. By deteriorating the freedom and strength of individuals’ minds and compelling them to live in a relentless state of propaganda-induced fear, The Party is able to oblige its subjects to accept anything it decrees, even if it is utterly illogical. The gist of the slogan is to persuade the citizens that what they want is what they already have. “War Is Peace” since having a mutual enemy keeps the people of Oceania united. “Freedom Is Slavery” because, according to The Party, the man who is sovereign is doomed to fail. “Ignorance Is Strength” because the incapability of the people to distinguish these illogicalities adhesives the power of the strict regime. This slogan changes the truth; it causes the citizens to have faith in that anything they want other then what their government wants can only make them unhappy.
