Should 1984 be banned?
Through the time of books in schools, controversy in literacy has been very relevant. People think books should be eligible for kids or immature people to read. The book 1984 by George Orwell can meet those requirements but it is how you understand the book and what its ideas of a future could have been. A man named Winston has experiences in the country that make him question everything. The book talks about how bad governments can make people rebellious. It can provide evidence of what people would believe the world would look like after the war. George Orwell illustrates that oppression's danger affects individual freedom and autonomy. The main character Winston Smith is a member of the outer party who works at the ministry of truth. He didn’t pick this job, big brother did. The leader of the land doesn’t give freedom to anyone. Winston is under the impression that his society is very oppressive. That builds more thought as to why he wanted to leave the country. He begins to be in a love affair with a girl named Julia. Collectively the two try to rebel against the party's control, so they can live in freedom. But eventually, they are caught, and they can’t try to rebel any longer as the Thought Police brutally tortured them until they were brainwashed to understand the party's ideology. “For the first time he perceived that if you want to keep a secret, you must also hide it from yourself.” (Orwell 354). This is what he thought of before the beating and brainwashing. The thought police would always be on him, but he couldn’t express his feelings or there would be consequences. “The choice for mankind lay between freedom and happiness, and that, for the great bulk of mankind, happiness was better.” (Orwell 331.) On the surface, this appears as a good look that the government wanted the citizens to be happy. But on a figurative level, the government doesn’t give any freedom and very little happiness. I chose this quote because it depicts how a majority of people would prefer to live where they don't have total freedom but are happy and content with their lives. But it can also show how the government's propaganda said “‘Freedom is slavery.’” (Orwell 6). That makes people believe only happiness is important. This book can emphasize the power humans have when they connect, which can inspire them to resist and fight
