20 February 2023 What is 1984’s Theme and How is it Shown in The Novel? Imagine fighting the government and being seen as the last person with humanity left in the world. What happens when you finally break down and lose your sense of individuality? We see this in the dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell, the main character Winston Smith is the last person left with humanity. He does not believe in the government he lives with until they finally crack him down and the world loses its previous piece of individuality. Readers gain a closer insight as to how they are always manipulating the intricate details, such as they have a new language called Newspeak. The party also vaporizes people and removes their existence to keep control over rebels. They even have absolute power to increase or decrease the rations for the people. Throughout book 2 of the novel 1984, readers gain an idea of how far the Party would actually go to sustain their power over Oceania, especially when they were able to establish classes within their association. The Party has even created a new language called Newspeak which is essentially an altered version of their current language, where they shorten the language usage of antonyms and synonyms and title it Newspeak. One of the side characters was vaporized and readers can understand how the Party has so much control over others. On page 169, “Yes,” said O’Brien. “we can turn it off. We have that privilege.” This showcases how even citizens in the party have different classes which give them more or less power. “The Tenth Edition is not due to appear for some months, I believe. But a few advance copies have been circulated.”(158). In addition, the Ministry of Truth has the responsibility of abbreviating its current language and titling it Newspeak. “Syme had vanished. A morning came, and he was missing from work; a few thoughtless people commented on his absence. On the next day, nobody mentioned him.”(147) This example creates an image of how quick their government can remove someone’s existence.
