The concept of power has been seen through centuries, from the establishment of ancient civilizations such as the Romans and the Persians, to modern day countries such as North Korea. Moreover, the status quo has simply remained that leaders want to possess power over the people that enlist under it. This is also known as a totalitarian government. A totalitarian government is defined as political authority or group that exercises absolute control over all aspects of the life of an individual. In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, The centralized government, known as the Party or INGSOC, demonstrates a totalitarian style of government over the Inner and Outer Party members in Oceania. It is clear that language is a vital aspect of human thought and psyche, because it structures and limits the ideas that individuals are capable of formulating and expressing. Seeing that, the Party takes this notion into great consideration, and creates a language called Newspeak. Newspeak is the official language of Oceania, that solely supports Ingsoc by removing words that pose as rebellious. More importantly, the Party created Newspeak to imprison any free thoughts that opposed their views as well as Big Brother’s that rebellion. Every citizen in Oceania is required to comprehend Newspeak, as all the words are written in the Newspeak Dictionary. The job to develop Newspeak is given to the most orthodox and loyal citizens of Oceania. Syme is chosen to work on the development of the 11th edition of Newspeak, due to devotion to Big Brother, the level of excitement for The Party, and level of directness in communication. One day while talking to Winston, they both discuss the upcoming edition of the Newspeak Dictionary. Syme being an outspoken individual says, “The whole literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron – they'll exist only in Newspeak versions” (Orwell 68). The Party’s ruthless ways of getting rid of iconic and praised literature just to have people believe in their ways of life by making they innately pure is simply sickening. Additionally, Syme says, “but in the final version of Newspeak there'll be nothing else. In the end the whole notion of goodness and badness will be covered by only six words – in reality, only one word. Don't you see the beauty of that, Winston?” (Orwell 66). This quote shows that the overall goal of the Party is to ultimately annihilate any occurrences of thought crime by providing the citizens of Oceania an extremely limited vocabulary to express their opinions of The Party’s actions.
