“The Freshman” and “Knute Rockne: All American”, two completely different plot lines with one connection: football to masculinity. “The Freshman” is about a Harold, a boy dreaming to go to college and be the most popular kid on campus. All of his dreams were based around this character from a movie, “College Hero”, name Speedy. Harold gets into Tate College and tries to copy Speedy in every way possible. Inorder for him to becomes the most popular student, he needs to take down the football captain.
What does director Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994), directed by Kenneth Branagh, have in common— a mutual underlying story; but their differences are what makes their tales all the more special. Edward Scissorhands is a retelling of Frankenstein, but with a slight twist. In Edward’s case instead of lacking companionship like Frankenstein’s monster, he lacks hands; and is received rather well by the surrounding community. Ironically, in both tales the characters share the same desire to be love; this ignites the question – why do humans want to be love? Are we only important as we are loved?

Lion, directed by Garth Davis, is a compelling interpretation of a remarkable true story of Saroo Brierley, lost as a child and reunited with his family 25 years later. Throughout Davis explores the unique circumstances under which Saroo is separated and reconnected with his family and his journey along the way. At some points of the film, I was confronted by how Saroo, a five-year-old boy, expertely navigates, with great instinct and genuine innocence, through an extended, yet life threatening ride. To put it in other words, Lion is a journey that grabs you entirely; whether you want it or not, and you are involved in each and every scene. In this scene we the audience are allowed to further grasped the underlying message of the film- that a person’s self-worth cannot be measured by their gene code. The director Andrew Niccol’s shows us this through the use of four key techniques in this scene are as follows Non-Diegetic music, a green tint, medium close up shot and cross cutting. Hero by director Zhang Yimou tells the myth of Nameless, a skilled martial art warrior who attempted to assassinate the King of Quin. He is a hero archetype who sacrifices himself in experiencing the Hero’s Journey for the benefit of all people. In the Ordinary World which is revealed at 58:18 of the film, Nameless is a man from Zhao. With his unique skills of sword fighting, he wanted to assassinate the King of Quin to revenge for his family that was killed by Quin soldiers.
The film ‘Good Will Hunting’ directed by Gus Van Sant is a movie which follows the life of Will Hunting who is gifted with astonishing skills for maths but whom suffered with a fear of abandonment. He developed a defense mechanism which affected his ability to create long lasting relationships. An important extract from the movie is the scene ‘ It’s not your fault’. This scene conveyed the impact of childhood traumas, the effects of suppressed emotions and the idea of soulmates. These ideas were manifested through the use of various film techniques, such as camera shots and movements, music and dialogue.
Damien Chazelle’s American musical film, La La Land (2016), with Director of Photography Linus Sandgren, won about six awards at the Oscars. One of the awards they received is in the Cinematography category. I personally agree with this voting because this beautifully-made film shows, not tells, the story. In the beginning of the film, the viewers see the story from Mia’s point of view, but the story later goes back and switches to Sebastian’s point of view.

Mia, (Uma Thurman) plays the role as Wallace’s wife, who is spends some time with Vincent, while Wallace leaves town for business purposes. The Revenant is a novel by Michael Punke originally published in 2002. Punke’s story is one of history, and it has been previously adapted into a movie in 1971 titled, Man in the Wilderness. All media and book did not stick to the original historical figure of Hugh Glass. Most recent adaptation in 2015 by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Despite the fact that the movie was made famous based on inaccuracy of the actual true story, it still presents wonderful cinematography.
The film “Argo”, directed by Ben Affleck, re-enacted the events of the Canadian Caper during the Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979-1981) in Tehran, Iran. Not all 53 hostages were captured as six American diplomats escaped and were taken into the care of Ken Taylor, the Canadian Prime Minister at the time, in the Canadian embassy. Taylor and the Canadian government created a plan to help the diplomats escape, however, they needed an intelligence force to back them up, which they didn’t have. The C.I.A was contacted to help Canada get the diplomats back to Canada safely with fake Canadian passports. The C.I.A created the fake movie called “Argo” as well as a fake studio and script.
