In 1776, one of the most popular and well known founding fathers led the fight for independence in the royal colonies. In David Hackett Fischer’s book, “Washington’s Crossing”, he describes the troubles and even the unknowns of Washington’s experiences during the Revolutionary War. Fischer goes into detail about the first approach of the British as their massive naval fleet surrounds the state of New York all the way up to the point when the British became the defensive force rather than the offensive. “Washington’s Crossing” illustrates how the American Revolution wasn’t just pure success as at the beginning of the war, the Americans took many losses that almost completely crushed the revolution entirely. Perhaps the most famous line from the Declaration of Independence, written on July 4, 1776. 1776 by David McCullough is about just that: the year 1776, though it does mention events in previous and following years, in American history. McCullough’s purpose for writing the book is very clear: to educate readers about the details of the American Revolutionary War from the view of both sides in and around 1776. McCullough achieves this through mostly logos, but uses ethos and pathos just as well.

He names 1775 as the catalyst year that pushed Americans Independence. Kevin Phillips has a background as a former Republican Party strategist and worked under the Nixon presidential campaign. His educational background consists of Colgate University, University of Edinburgh and Harvard law school.
Summary of the Main Ideas 1776 by David McCullough is a wonderful history of how the Revolutionary War began. It accurately showcases the perspectives of all kinds of people, from England’s King, George III, to the common soldiers of the Continental Army. General George Washington has just been appointed the Commander in Chief of the newly formed colonial armies as the occupation of Boston continues. Underneath the onslaught of the British forces, the Continental Army is pushed back again and again, pressure into a lengthy retreat. Battle after battle is won by the British and the dedication of the patriots falters.
The American Revolution was a pivotal time in the making of the United States of America. The British wanted to maintain control of the Colonies. The people wanted freedom and release from the taxation England had imposed on the Colonies. During this battle for independence several heroes emerged. One of those heroes was General Benedict Arnold.
Over the course of American history, society has dealt with many flaws, and dilemmas. In Source B, it illustrates that Abigail Adams, John’s wife, wanted the Continental Congress to remember the ladies when they write The Declaration of Independence. In Source C, it rationalizes how slaves didn’t have equal rights as white men, and the petition is trying to give their natural rights back. Furthermore, in Source D, a miniseries that depicted John Adams life, given particular the Revolutionary War. This source allows the viewer to visualize the conflicts that the Continental Congress had, with the colonists, and the British.
Rhetorical strategies including pathos, ethos, and logos are stylistic elements often used as a persuasion technique to get an audience to either buy a product or participate in something. Advertisements almost always have at least one of these three components, and Super Bowl commercials specifically are renowned for their entertaining use of these strategies. Of the many Super Bowl commercials, two stood out to me for their in-depth use of all three of these rhetorical strategies. The first commercial combines the extreme measures taken by an overprotective dad and the new Hyundai Genesis. These two seemingly unlike ideas are brought together in a collaboration that effectively use pathos, ethos, and logos to prove the audience of their product.

Going forward in the commercial a newspaper is seen with the front headline reading “2012 Mayan Apocalypse, Will world end today?” giving the viewer’s an explanation for the destruction of the city. Next, you see a vehicles headlights turn on and a Chevy truck drive out of the debris. In the truck an average working class man is in the driver’s seat with his pet dog in the back driving around town seeing the destruction of the apocalypse with a Barry Manilow song “Looks like we made it” playing in the background.

The American Revolution was a war of principles fought between the Loyalists and the Patriots. The Loyalists believed that they should stay loyal to the king because they didn't want to go into war. They didn't want to lose their fortune or businesses because if the Patriots won they would lose it all. Moreover, the Patriots fought for the principle of freedom. They fought for their rights.
