An Inquiry Primer. After I read this assigned reading; I understood that its main focus was to encourage teachers to use the inquiry and the inquiry-based instructions while teaching, but according to Alan Colburn (2008); “developing an inquiry-based science program is the central tenet of the National Science Education Standards (NRC 1996). Similarly project 2061’s Benchmarks for Science Literacy discusses scientific inquiry throughout and even devotes a section of the topic to science (1993).” After trying to understand why teachers aren’t using the inquiry-based instructions in school is because, as according to A. According to A. Colburn (2008); “inquiry-based instruction is the creation of a classroom where students are engaged in essentially open-ended, student- centered, hands-on activities”. Inquiry-based instruction consist of; structure inquiry, guided inquiry, open inquiry and the learning cycle. Structure inquiry; this is where the teacher gives the students a hands-on problem, materials and a procedure. The students now have to discover on their own results. This inquiry takes place when the teacher provides to students with the materials and the procedure and the students have to create their own procedure. As an upcoming teacher I find this inquiry gives way to students thinking on their own so they can create these steps by just looking at the problem and using the materials to formulate the steps where they can find an answer for their problem. There’s another inquiry called open inquiry. This inquiry is similar to guided inquiry, in this inquiry students are to create their own problem, so now the students can use their materials to create something and then formulate a problem as to what they are looking for, by using the materials and create a procedure, then experiment their procedures. After experimenting the students can now create questions form what they observed as their problem. As an upcoming teacher, I think it’s a great way to help students think outside of the box. It also can make learning fun for students, and encourages team work. Lastly, the learning cycle. This activity is where students are doing a new activity that teachers a new method or concept. The teacher will formally give the name for this concept and the students now have to take the responsibility to apply this method to different
