Relationships between police officers and the general public have been a roller coaster ride over the past 30 years, when it comes to the way some officers act when put in bad situations, or even if they are just acting out of anger. Melvin Russell explains in his speech that police officers need to do a better job of working with the public and treating them as if they are a customer. Russell has been a police officer himself for nearly 40 years, and is the Chief of the Community Partnership Division of the Baltimore Police Department. The TedTalk, “I Love Being a Police Officer, but We Need Reform,” by Melvin Russell was very persuasive and proposed a strong argument by using pathos and having an engaging voice, being credible in his words,
I agree that officers have a stressful and demanding job. I think that the police needs to know how the community and the board sees them. Sometimes the truth hurts and in this case it may but they need to know. I think your idea on having officers at community events is a great idea. Showing that the officers care makes the community respect their authority more.
An officer is working for the public helping to protect and to help keep everyone safe from danger. The public does not work as an officer because they are not trained or are aware of how the job works. When misusing your power this takes an effect on the public and how they will function around the police. You want the public to feel welcome and that they feel safe knowing that there is an officer around. Police that are leaving horrible impressions on the public is what ruins the relationship between the people and officers.
They head dive into a disconnected, withdrawn, worn-out, and indifferent state of being. Cops that experiences this biological roller-coaster is a “heat seekers.” Therefore, their interaction and on duty stimulation take a dive when they get home, making it difficult to respond to any kind of normal interactions. With the workloads on them, it’s difficult for them to spend time with love ones. A relationship that was once loving becomes destroy by lack of emotional investment and energy.
The work that police officers do is very complex. There are different rules and codes that they are supposed to follow in order to accomplish their job at their organization. Police officers present different behaviors while patrolling and in other areas of policing that creates many confrontations with the society as well inside their departments with co-workers and other people above them. In police departments exits different codes that police officers follow that many times create that police misconduct and police brutality stay under the rug, without been penalized. In the movie Fort Apache the Bronx it portrayed how police corruption, misconduct and unethical behavior were part of their daily work just because they followed certain codes
When it comes down to it, officers have the great responsibility of keeping citizens safe and if there is no trust between these groups of people, then the system will not be successful and it will fail. Those in uniform have acquired a large feeling of distrust from citizens in some places because of these unfortunate shooting incidents. We need to work on building a better relationship between police and citizens because we are all in it together. The police are listening, they are there to help. It is a work in progress and every day we are moving toward a better tomorrow where we can all be seen
When talking about the ongoing controversy and public debate on the outlook of police and community relationship a message or headline or even a video that is posted online involving an officer and an individual is going to be overflowed with every opinionated, negativity there is to say about how unprofessional the officer
Law enforcement jobs are known to be reasonably dangerous jobs, and officers are often placed in circumstances where they are required to make instantaneous life and death
From early studies of police departments and law enforcement agencies, their culture is described as authoritarian, cynical, distrustful, elitist, homogeneous, macho, misogynist, monolithic, pessimistic, suspicious, insular, socially isolated and highly resistant to change. Relationships between police officers and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve is often times tense and difficult to maneuver. Police departments can implement an effective mechanism for change as "fish rot from the head first. "
In Law Enforcement and enforcing the law there is six areas in which police departments have been found to be defective or deficient. This is a very difficult topic for me to agree with because police officers are put in to very stressful and unknown circumstances on a daily bases. In many cases these scenarios require a decision to be made in a split second or it could be life or death. This split second decision has months and months to be twisted and picked apart by lawyers, jury, and mostly the media. Another reason police receive such attention is because it is their job to be in the view of the public at all times and today’s technology is making it even more difficult for them to effectively and efficiently do their jobs.
2. I believe that personal and organizational influence because police officers could be tired physically or personally use force toward someone they don 't like. Physically officers could be also tried due to long hours on the job that may impair judgement or cause quick reaction. Secondly, an officer 's emotional state of mind could be impaired so, this can cause a collision of attitudes on and off the job.
Police brutality is primarily known as excessive and/or unnecessary force police officers use upon a person. Police are given “power” that they seem to really take out of proportion. Many police officers take it upon themselves to be rough upon someone they may feel as a menace to society, which that officer may be wrong. Yes, most of the time they are wrong.
Over the past few decades, police departments across the country have received significant amounts of military-grade equipment, including weapons, vehicles, and surveillance technology. This has led to a culture in which police officers are trained to view themselves as soldiers at war with their own communities. This mindset can contribute to a more aggressive and confrontational approach to policing, which can increase the likelihood of the use of excessive force. Additionally, the use of military equipment can also contribute to a sense of fear and intimidation among community members, which can further erode trust in law
Many People in the United States has been victims of police brutality, being accused of committing a crime you did not do just because of how you look. Or, being treated differently just because of where you are from. Regardless of how you look, Police Officers are there to help people, not hurt them. This is affecting many people in the United States, many have been victims or has a relative that experienced this. Police Brutality is using excessive or unnecessary force when dealing with civilians.
The main goal for police officers should be keeping communities safe and free from fear, including fear of the officers themselves. Andrew
